Drifting
Harry Jr Connick Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm really not that naive
You wear a smile but it's drifting, drifting
While I wear my heart on my sleeve
I feel your coldness against my skin
I know what follows the autumn wind
And though you say your heart isn't drifting, drifting
The words simply don't ring true
In Harry Jr Connick's song "Drifting," the singer is addressing their partner who they suspect is losing interest in the relationship. The singer notes that they can see their partner's eyes drifting away, and while they try to put on a smile, it's clear that they are no longer fully invested in the relationship. Despite their partner's protestations that their heart isn't drifting, the singer can feel their partner's coldness against their skin and fears that they are losing them. The singer is brutally honest about their own vulnerability, noting that they wear their heart on their sleeve, and acknowledges the pain and sadness that comes with a relationship ending.
The lyrics in "Drifting" are incredibly insightful and convey the complex emotions that often accompany the end of a relationship. The singer is deeply hurt but also aware of the signs that the relationship is coming to an end. They can sense their partner's growing distance and feel the coldness that accompanies it. The song is a powerful exploration of the fear and sadness that come with letting go of someone you love, and the need for honesty and self-awareness in relationships.

I was there too. Dragged along reluctantly by a long gone partner. She drifted away from my side and my memory.. but the song and the performance have stuck in my head for the last 30 years. I seem to remember him dragging out the conductor for audience praise and saying he had co written it? Or, maybe my mind fails me ..
