Bought this LP back when it came out in the '70's. This was so good I played the grooves off this album. It had everything - Soul, Jazz, Arrangements. and this guys voice !!! Mind Blown! This guy was something else. It was sad to hear of his demise. This Album and his music will stand always- It comes across as good today as it did back then. Here's to a great musician !!!!

I think folks are always suprised at how talented some of these artists are from the 60's and 70's. Many started off as musicians and then began to sing. A perfect example is someone like Donny Hathaway..and he is only the tip of the iceberg....I think Marvin Gaye was a drummer before he took hold of the mike....

I've only ever heard the George Benson version played on the guitar. Love this version too, electric/synth piano sound is just such a cool jazz musical piece of equipment.What a player, what a tune. Thanks for posting

Bought the 45rpm single of this back in the mid 1980s. Still play it loud today despite the scratches and pops. A superb piece of music.

I heard this song yesterday on my local college jazz station after not hearing this in decades! I didn't even know it was a Donny Hathaway song until the DJ announced it at the end. I would have been 12 or 13 years old when this song came out -- it's been at least 30-35 years since I last heard this. Wow! Where has the time gone? I'm glad someone had the good sense to post this classic gem here on YT. Thanks so much!

Donny wrote the song, although the Cold Blood version may have been released before his own (he was the producer on the CB record). All the versions have something to recommend them, but I have always resented Benson's dropping of all the cool changes and just vamping. Lazy.

Very cool! I thought Donny might have written this for the band 'Cold Blood' since they used it on an album he produced for them in 1972 ('First taste of Sin'). They do a superb version with horns, and a killer ballad Donny wrote called 'You Had To Know' with Lydia Pence doing stunning vocals!
