Down Through the Night
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down down and down,
Down down and down
As we spin through the night
With ever increasing might

Down down and down,
Down down and down
Returning volumes of sound
Into the blackness we drown

Round round and round,
Round round and round

As we lay in our sleep
The appointment we keep
Down down and down,
Down down and down

Only the rushing is heard
Onward flies the bird
Deep, deep, and deep,
Must we sink in our sleep

Down down and down,
Down down and down
Round round and round,

Returning volumes of sound
Returning volumes of sound...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hawkwind's "Down Through the Night" describe a journey through space, spinning and flying through the darkness with increasing speed and power. The repetition of the phrase "down down and down" emphasizes the sense of descent and acceleration, while the lines "returning volumes of sound / into the blackness we drown" suggest an overwhelming, almost terrifying experience.

The second stanza introduces the idea of sleep or unconsciousness, perhaps suggesting that the journey through space is actually a dream or a metaphor for a deeper psychological journey. The lines "only the rushing is heard / onward flies the bird" suggest a loss of control or agency, as if the dreamer is being swept along by external forces. The final stanza echoes the first, emphasizing the sense of descent and repetition, as if the dreamer is trapped in an endless cycle of falling.

This is such a killer bass line. Young Lemmy did a great job here.

Saw them at the Santa Monica Auditorium in 1973. Still can't believe what I saw. 50 years later, still my favorite song.

This is one of my favourite songs ever. Absolutely fantastic. I can't understand why it's not famous: the line, the psychodelic "space" feeling is just phenomenal.

Saw them live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium Dec of 1973; could not believe what I saw. Many credit the GREAT base play, but I have never seen greater drum play. All in black light with a spaceship steaming in the corner. UNBELIEVABLE.. Dutzi
