Infinity
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to be of human kind
I had a life to lead
But now I'm frozen in a dream
My life is lost it seems
She turned the key of endlessness
And locked me in a dream,
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity

Infinity so beautiful
Has turned my soul to ice
And crystallised eternity
For all my future time
She turned the key of endlessness
And locked me in a dream,
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity

I met her in a forest glade
Where starbeams grew like trees
I did not take her for a witch
She wasn't what she seemed
She turned the key of endlessness
And locked me in a dream,
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity

I used to be of human kind
I had a life to lead
But now I'm frozen in a dream
My life is lost it seems
She turned the key of endlessness
And locked me in a dream,
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity
Infinity

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hawkwind's song "Infinity" hint at a deep sense of loss and resignation. The singer reflects on their life before they fell under the spell of a mysterious woman who seems to have locked them into a dreamlike state. The opening lines suggest that the singer had a life before this happened, but now they are frozen in what seems like an eternal dream. The sense of being trapped is reinforced by the repetition of the word 'Infinity.' The singer is now only able to experience a frozen, crystallized 'future time' that feels like an eternity. Infinity is no longer beautiful, but a force that has turned the singer's soul to ice.

The second half of the song explores how the singer met the woman who trapped them. It reveals that they met her in a forest glade where starbeams grew like trees. The singer did not realize she was a witch, but after she 'turned the key of endlessness,' she locked them in a dream. The repetition of 'Infinity' in the song's closing lines emphasizes the singer's feeling of being trapped and unable to escape. The repetition has the effect of reinforcing this sense of entrapment, with each repetition being a step closer to a singular, all-consuming Infinity.

This song is open to interpretation, but it may be a metaphor for addiction or being trapped in a depressive state. The singer's sense of loss and disconnection is conveyed through their regretful tone. It is a haunting song that speaks to the human experience of feeling trapped and helpless.

My thoughts exactly!

I could never understand the negatively surrounding this album. It's fantastic every song is a classic. Infinity being a classic example this is I think one of the best songs the Hawks have crafted.

@chestikov2011 - Hope you've got Hawkwind's 'Wind of Change' on that playlist. If not, check that one out too.
