Looking in the Future
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lives of great men all remind us
We may make our lives sublime
And so departing leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time
And with the writing I will show you
Looking in the days beyond recall
As I lecture back with the spirits of the other time
I'm living in the future
I'm looking in the future
I'm living in the future

Not a sound was heard
No call came from the bird
Only the carpet of green
From towering trees was seen
Where have they all gone
Why was there no song

I'm living in the future
Looking at the past

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song starts with a quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "A Psalm of Life". The lives of great men, according to Longfellow, remind us that we can make our own lives just as exemplary. The singer then talks about leaving behind footprints in the sands of time. This refers to the notion that our actions have consequences that ripple through time, sometimes long after we are gone. The singer then uses metaphorical language to describe how he is communicating with past spirits and looking to the days beyond recall. It is clear that the singer is reflecting on the past while simultaneously thinking about the future, and trying to find meaning in both.

The second stanza takes us to the present moment, where the singer hears no sounds except the carpet of green and towering trees. Birds are absent, and the singer wonders where they have all gone. The lack of birdsong suggests an eerie stillness and the possibility of environmental damage. The singer then repeats the earlier refrain about living and looking into the future, followed by a reference to the past.

Overall, the lyrics suggest a deep contemplation about the passage of time, the consequences of our actions, and the importance of leaving behind a positive legacy. It also touches on the importance of caring for the environment and the need for a sustainable future.
