Master of the Universe
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am the centre of then universe
The wind of time is blowing through me
And it's all moving relative to me
It's all a figment of my mind
In a world that I've designed
I'm charged with cosmic energy
Has the world gone mad or is it me?
I'm the creator of this universe
And all that is was meant to be
So that we might learn to see
The foolishness that lives in us
And stupidity that we must suss

How to banish from our minds
If you call this living, I must be blind

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song Master of the Universe by Hawkwind, "I am the centre of then universe, The wind of time is blowing through me," suggests a grandiose sense of self-importance. The singer seems to believe that they are at the very core of the world, and that everything is moving relative to them. They go on to say that the world is a mere figment of their imagination, created in their mind. The singer seems to believe they are charged with cosmic energy and have created the universe, so that we might learn from it. The last two lines, "If you call this living, I must be blind," suggests a lack of fulfillment or happiness despite their belief in their own importance.

Overall, the lyrics seem to be about a god-like figure who views themselves as being the centre of the universe, the creator of everything, and charged with cosmic energy. However, despite this apparent power, the singer seems to be questioning whether the world has gone mad, or if perhaps it is themselves who are mad. They also seem to suggest that there is great foolishness and stupidity in humanity, which we must learn to banish from our minds.

After listening to Hawkwind for 30 plus years, I have come to the conclusion that they are on drugs.

@TheCornishCockney

I had a mate who used to deal in acid and a nice little touch from him was a burned Hawkwind track on a cd for each of his punters.
It's customer service like that that is sadly lacking from todays rude and frankly,bad-mannered and impatient "want it and want it now" society.
We had a code back then to get high and listen to music,(you know which bands) eat food and laugh with friends and all done with patience and good grace.
Can you see any youngster listening to a whole album all the way through these days? no,me neither.
Damn,i miss those days.

@Cockney Red ain't that the truth! Thursday a gentle few at the pub but Friday nights at mine or a mates house was music, chat, and hysterical laughter - the true beginning of a great weekend. What went wrong for the next gen we will never know. But here's a personal invite; Click Maggie's face and come have a listen to Fantom Aeronautics, you might like it. This music is noisy and experimental and made the old fashioned way, by someone who was actually there and lived it. All of it ;)

@randolphcarter9163

It took you thirty years?

@santallum

Don't be too hasty

@MrRobangelo

In 1972 I took my new and very beautiful 16 year old girlfriend to a Hawkwind gig in Brighton. She turned up in a perfect clean light blue dress, looking like a blonde angel. The gig was full of long haired tripping scruffy hippies, choking joss stick and hash smoke. There was a naked woman throwing herself around on stage and this earsplitting noise, well you couldnt call it music. She made me leave after 15 minutes and take her home. Never saw her again but I have seen Hawkwind many times since.

@Jlipnicki

It sounds like a complete fantasy. Stacia does paintings and was beyond concepts such as narcissism.

My very first concert was Hawkwind. I too was 16, with my 15yr old girlfriend.. Best night of my life up until that point. Still seems like the defining moment my adulthood began.
