Prometheus
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He is a vision of a telepathic martyr,
Born of a comet from a crystal sun.
Just an illusion of a giant star dying,
He's more than human, he's a God Machine.
...
A sound and fury of a sonic solution,
A panacea, he's a master of time.
Mandrake messiah on a gravity waveform,
He's an exotic, he's a manna machine
...
Prometheus rises in a rush of sound.
The power of the ancient's light he found.
The secrets of the stars etched in his face,
Defies the laws of physics to continue the race.
...
A product of collisions in a neutron star,
An artificial product, born in a jar.
Omnidetector, a neurotic revelator,
He's enigmatic, a stigmata of time.
...
Prometheus rises in a rush of sound.
The power of the ancient's light he found.
The secrets of the stars etched in his face,
Defies the laws of physics to continue the race.
...
Prometheus rises in a rush of sound.
The power of the ancient's light he found.

The secrets of the stars etched in his face,
Defies the laws of physics to continue the race.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Prometheus" by Hawkwind tell the story of a being that is not quite human, but rather a "God Machine." The opening lines set the stage for this otherworldly character, describing him as a vision of a telepathic martyr who was born of a comet from a crystal sun. This figure is more than just a human being, he represents a new level of existence, closer to a deity than a mortal human.

The lyrics go on to describe Prometheus as a master of time, capable of manipulating and controlling it. He possesses a powerful and exotic energy that defies the laws of physics and challenges the limits of human understanding. He is a product of artificial collision, a being born in a jar, an enigmatic and neurotic revelator of secrets hidden in the stars.

The repeated chorus of "Prometheus rises in a rush of sound" creates a sense of excitement and awe towards this figure, as if his arrival is a grand and epic event. The lyrics suggest that Prometheus is not just a being, but rather an embodiment of the mysteries and potential of the universe, capable of pushing humanity to new heights and challenging us to reach beyond our understanding.

Lets face it, any album is just an advert for an up-coming concert. If more bands toured and made their money from live performances (as Hawkwind do), 'Piracy' wouldn't even exist. Enjoy the music, buy the album if you wish. But most importantly, go and see your favourite band perform! We all know it sounds sooo much better live!!!!
