Wings
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could see their dying note
In the sky that is so old
I remember where they once flew
Where they sang to the morning dew
Now their wings are soaked in oil
Caged wings that can't unfurl
No longer do we hear them sing
No longer do we hear the fluttering
Of wings
Underneath the iron bird
Their song cannot be heard

Above the human sound
Above the poisoned ground

Overall Meaning

The song Wings by Hawkwind is a poignant reflection on the environmental damage that humanity has caused. The opening verse, "I could see their dying note in the sky that is so old," suggests that the writer is witnessing the last gasps of life from a natural world that has existed for eons. The imagery of birds as they once were, "where they sang to the morning dew," stands in stark contrast to their present state, "now their wings are soaked in oil, caged wings that can't unfurl."

In the following verse, the repetition of "no longer" emphasizes the sense of loss, "no longer do we hear them sing, no longer do we hear the fluttering of wings." The image of the "iron bird" is particularly striking, as it refers to the airplanes that have disrupted the natural order of things. The final verse, "above the human sound, above the poisoned ground," highlights the idea that the damage caused by humans has not only changed the face of the natural world, but also the very sounds that it produces.

Overall, Wings is a powerful commentary on the negative impact that humans have had on the environment, particularly on the animal world. It is a reminder to take heed of the damage being done and to work to make changes for the better.

COSMIC Lust

Besides albums that premiered before I heard this band. I have masters of the universe. But I bought this album when it first came out. This band is very versatile. They play acid rock and New Wave or alternatively music. I'm very impressed about that.
