Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris
Hayley Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have seen your body
And I have seen your beauty
They are separate things
Pretty, pretty, pretty things

But I am in a garden
Tending to my own
So what do I care
And what do you care if I grow?
If I grow

Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses
(Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses)
Show no concern for colors of a violet
Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus
(Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus)
Hopes it won't spark envy in your irises

I think of all the wilted women
Who crane their necks to reach a window
Ripping all their petals off just cause
"He loves me now, he loves me not"

I myself was a wilted woman
Drowsy in a dark room
Forgot my roots
Now watch me bloom

Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses
(Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses)
Show no concern for colors of a violet
Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus
(Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus)
Hopes it won't spark envy in your irises (irises)

And I will not compare other beauty to mine
And I will not become a thorn in my own side
And I will not return to where I once was
Well I can break through the earth, come up soft and wild

Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses
(Roses, roses, roses, roses, roses)
Show no concern for colors of a violet
Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus
(Lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus, lotus)
Hopes it won't spark envy in your irises

(Roses, roses, roses, roses)

(Roses, roses, roses, roses)

(Roses, roses, roses, roses)

(Roses, roses, roses, roses)

Overall Meaning

In "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris," Hayley Williams explores the themes of self-acceptance, personal growth, and breaking free from societal expectations.

The opening lines, "I have seen your body, And I have seen your beauty, They are separate things," suggest that the singer understands that physical appearance and inner beauty are distinct. They also acknowledge the pressure society places on individuals to conform to certain beauty standards.

The singer then asserts their independence, stating, "But I am in a garden, Tending to my own, So what do I care, And what do you care if I grow?" This implies that they are focused on their own personal growth and self-care, and they question why it should matter to others.

The repeated references to roses, lotus, violet, and iris serve as symbols for different types of beauty. The singer sings, "Roses show no concern for colors of a violet, Lotus hopes it won't spark envy in your irises." This suggests that the singer is not comparing their unique beauty to others and doesn't want their growth to incite jealousy or envy in those around them.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on the societal pressure placed upon women. They mention the "wilted women" who anxiously pick off flower petals to see if someone loves them or not. The singer then shares their own personal experience of being a "wilted woman" who was once lost and disconnected from their true self. However, they have now found their roots and are ready to bloom.

In the final verse, the singer emphasizes their commitment to self-acceptance and breaking free from past influences. They declare, "And I will not compare other beauty to mine, And I will not become a thorn in my own side, And I will not return to where I once was." Instead, they choose to embrace their unique beauty, grow and thrive.

Overall, "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris" serves as an empowering anthem for self-love, personal growth, and breaking free from societal expectations. It encourages listeners to embrace their own beauty without comparing themselves to others and to celebrate their journey of growth and transformation.
