Fairytale
Heather Dale Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's supposed to be a carriage
With a footmen and a groom
There's supposed to be a palace
And I escape the cinders and the broom
There's supposed to be a wedding
With glass slippers and a crown
You're supposed to be Prince Charming
Not chasing girls out in the town

[Chorus]
Don't you want a fairytale?
Don't you, don't you want this fairytale?
Don't you wanna live my fairytale with me?

There's supposed to be a tower
With brambles all around
And I'm suppose to be a princess
High above and looking down
It's supposed to be important
That you come and set me free
You're supposed to be a hero
Not out with easier girls then me

[Chorus]

Don't tell me in your story
If you can play like Peter Pan
With your second start till morning
And your boy within the man
In a happy ever after
We're suppose to share the dream
Where you're riding to my rescue
And I get to be the Queen

[Chorus X]
Don't you wanna live my fairytale with me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Heather Dale's "Fairytale" are a commentary on the expectations that society has for romantic relationships, particularly the idea that women are supposed to wait for their "prince charming" to sweep them off their feet and save them from their mundane lives. The first verse sets up the traditional fairytale scenario - the carriage, the palace, the glass slippers - but then the mood shifts when the singer realizes that her partner is not living up to the fairytale ideal. Instead of playing the role of the prince, he's out chasing other women.

The second verse references the story of Sleeping Beauty, in which the princess is trapped in a tower, waiting for her prince to come and rescue her. But again, the mood shifts when the singer challenges the notion that women are helpless damsels in distress. She points out that she doesn't need a hero to come and save her, and she certainly doesn't want a partner who is off chasing other women.

The chorus repeats the idea that the singer wants a fairytale romance, but on her own terms. She doesn't want a partner who is going to betray her and shatter her illusions. Instead, she wants a partner who is willing to share her dreams and help her write her own happy ending.

Overall, "Fairytale" is a powerful commentary on the ways in which traditional gender roles can be limiting and oppressive. It's a call for relationships that are built on equality, mutual respect, and a willingness to challenge the status quo.

That's true. I often wonder, on a slightly different note, how the women whose men were heading off to battle could bear it...in stories like Lord of the Rings for example. If I had were in their position, nothing short of a lot of family dependent on me would sustain me.

WingCommanderVinyaya

It's hard to tell which party has the rougher deal: the male, who has to play hero, or the female, who has to put up with being rescued?

i want "each step".. from the same album as this thanks

What's up I'm Laura

I love this song ty❤

TheaterRaven

Well, I think what's most frustrating about waiting to be rescued is just that, the waiting. At least guys can go out and chase or search or whatever. Girls have to sit on the balcony with chin in hand, patiently waiting for the knight, and that idea of being trapped, of having no control over when things happen and just having to wait for the happy ending to come to you, it can wear on the patience very harshly. But I also understand how it could be difficult from the man's point of view, too.

TheaterRaven

Maybe it's because I'm a female, but I'd say we have the rougher deal. Sitting around and waiting to be rescued, unable to leave the tower to go search for our knight lest we be labeled by society as women of lower class, can get a little dull and disheartening at times.

DragonMasterThlayli

I can't help but think of Shrek when I hear this song.

Eva Moon

I never thought it could be possible. I'm not a princess. I never believed it but I hoped you would

Manya Agarwal

I don't like princess type of fairytales, (I'd prefer Narnia type fairytales) but I love this song. How weird is that?

WingCommanderVinyaya

I don't know. Both sides need to put up with some serious crap...and the rescuing can't always be a load of fun and games. Still, I take your point.
