Overall Meaning

Heather Menzies's song "Do Re Mi" begins with the starting point of learning, which is the very beginning. She sings about two different ways to start - reading and singing, teaching the audience that when you read, you start with the alphabet (A-B-C) but when you sing, you start with do-re-mi. Heather Menzies then introduces the seven musical notes and makes it easy by singing them in sequence. She then uses the mnemonic system to teach each note with different examples such a deer, a female deer for "doe," a drop of golden sun for "ray," etc.

This has been my favorite scene in the movie since I saw the movie with my family on V.H.S when I was only six years old. The kids really start bonding with Maria in this scene. I doubt the kids had this much fun with the other governesses they had since the death of their mother.

Also I think Maria understood the children more then the other governesses did. The other governesses did not understand the children. They left because they thought the children were badly behaved. Maria understood the children just wanted their father's love.

another way I think Maria was different from the former governesses was that when Maria arrived one of the children put a toad in her pocket. she did not tell the captain what the children did because she did not want them to get in trouble with their father. in contrast to Maria I think former governesses would have told the captain

Here's something really helpful for begginers - despite what the title would have you think, this song is in the key of A#, because she's teaching them by using the "Movable Do" system, in which "Do" is whatever note is the root of the key, "Re" is the one next to it, and so on.
