In For The Kill
Heaven 17 and La Roux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can fight our desires (ooh)
But when we start making fires
We get ever so hot (ooh)
Whether we like it or not
They say we can love who we trust (ooh)
But what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions (ooh)
What are feelings without emotions?

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand
I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

I hang my hopes out on the line (ooh)
Will they be ready for you in time?
If you leave them out too long (ooh)
They'll be withered by the sun
Full stops and exclamation marks (ah) (ooh)
My words stumble before I start
How far can you send emotions? (Ooh)
Can this bridge cross the ocean?

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand
I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

Let's go to war to make peace
Let's be cold to create heat
I hope in darkness we can see
And you're not blinded by the light from me

Ooh

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill

Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "In for the Kill" by Heaven 17 and La Roux explore the theme of desire and what drives it. The song starts by acknowledging the struggle to resist our desires, but at the same time, when we give in to them, they consume us. The lyrics suggest that love and trust are not enough to sustain a relationship; there needs to be an element of physical attraction or lust. The song implies that without emotions, our feelings are incomplete, and accurate devotion alone is not enough to sustain a relationship.

The chorus of "I'm going in for the kill, I'm doing it for a thrill, oh, I'm hoping you'll understand and not let go of my hand" suggests a sense of desperation to hold onto something that brings excitement and pleasure, even if it may cause pain or danger. The imagery of hanging hopes out on a line, hoping they will be ready for someone, also indicates how fragile and fleeting our desires can be. Overall, the lyrics of "In for the Kill" are reflective and cautious about the power of desire and its consequences.

His vocal style doesnt really fit the track, but they work well together. He is almost more of a crooner! I have a lot of respect for him, being old enough to remember Heaven 17 the first time around, and the gig as a whole was really cool. Nice chemistry. Def worth a look if you havent seen it all.

I really love this, 2 of my favourite artists from different eras together.

André Pimentel

Great version. Glenn Gregory still rocks. I adore Ellie's voice.

You are absolutely right. His voice fits the very classic Heaven 17 style, but he is doing a very good job here - and he has obviously fun.

Sophia G

Absolutely fantastic performance & pairing :-)

Andy Lockwood

To those bashing "Heaven 17," his name is Glenn Gregory. He is now in his 50s, and time takes a toll on any singer's vocal chords. Interestingly, one of LaRoux's influences is Heaven 17. One day Elly will be in her 50s and not exhibiting the vocal dexterity she enjoys today in support of some 20-something-year-old's hit song. So let's cut "Heaven 17" some slack. It's great to see a past star of the early 80s new wave movement together with a superstar of today's new wave revival.

he still sounds good.  They need a comeback album!

Love it !!
