Heavy D was born Dwight Errington Myers on 24 May 1967 in Jamaica. His family moved to Mount Vernon, New York when he was a young child.
Heavy D & the Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records; their debut, Living Large, was released in 1987 (see 1987 in music). The album was a commercial success, though Big Tyme (1989, 1989 in music) was a breakthrough that included four hits. Trouble T. Roy died at age 22 in a stage accident on 15 July 1990 (see 1990 in music), which led to a tribute on the follow-up platinum album, Peaceful Journey (1991, 1991 in music). Pete Rock & CL Smooth created a tribute to Trouble T. Roy called "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" which is regarded as a hip-hop classic.
Heavy D & the Boyz gained more fans by appearing in the theme song for the television program In Living Color and also MADtv ,and Heavy D performed the rap on Michael Jackson's hit single "Jam." However, the group's next album, Blue Funk, was a critical and commercial failure compared to their previous success. Heavy D then began focusing on his acting, appearing in the television shows Roc and Living Single before returning the music charts with Nuttin' But Love (1994, 1994 in music). After appearing in the off-Broadway play Riff Raff at Circle Repertory Company, Heavy D returned to recording with the hit Waterbed Hev. He then acted in the motion pictures Life and The Cider House Rules before joining the cast of the television show Boston Public. In 1997, Heavy D collaborated with B.B. King on his duets album Deuces Wild rapping in the song "Keep It Coming." A new Heavy D & the Boyz album is slated for 2007.
Heavy D died on November 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 44. He collapsed outside of his Beverly Hills home.

And I'ma rip this, then I'ma hop hip
Better yet hip-hop, cause you're a drip-drop
Small as a pebble, while Heavy D's a bedrock
I am the capital, H-E-V rappable
King ambassador with more, who's quite a radical
My style's like particular, extra-curricular
Sit back relax, while Heavy D sticks to ya

When I need a cut I see Scott, for proper groomin
I'ma go on and flow on and turn my microphone on
then blow on to make sure, the sound is strong!
So y'all get up, keep your head up, and then gear up
Heav' is in the funk, the Boyz in the back will fold the rear up
MC's in my path I'ma steadily pounce
Heavy D's in effect with more bounce to the ounce
"More bounce, to the ounce"
More bounce to the ounce!

The song "More Bounce" by Heavy D & The Boyz is an ode to Heavy D's hometown of Mount Vernon and a celebration of his own success as a rapper. The song begins with Heavy D shouting out his DJ and crew before launching into his signature smooth flow. He boasts about his lyrical prowess, describing his rhymes as "butter" and "milky," and asserts his dominance over other MCs who cross his path. He also describes himself as "overweight rubbable, squeezably lovable" and "huggable," exuding confidence and charm throughout the song.
The chorus, "More bounce to the ounce," is a reference to a popular funk and soul phrase from the 1970s, describing a funky bassline with lots of grooves and energy. Here, Heavy D uses the phrase to describe his own music, suggesting that his brand of hip-hop is just as funky and energetic as the classic funk hits of the past. The song includes several other references to classic hip-hop and R&B, such as name-checking Biz Markie and the Heavy D Shake dance.
Overall, "More Bounce" is a feel-good party anthem with catchy lyrics and a smooth, upbeat rhythm, embodying Heavy D's unique style and exuberant energy. It is a tribute to his hometown, and a testament to his own success as a rapper and trendsetter in the hip-hop community of the late 80s and early 90s.
