Following the release of their seventh studio album Cageless (2017) and its accompanying tour, current members of Hedley faced accusations of sexual misconduct with young women over the course of their career. After Hoggard faced additional accusations of sexual assault by two women, the group confirmed they would enter an indefinite hiatus.
On July 23, 2018, Hoggard was charged with one count of Sexual Interference and two counts of Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm. On June 5, 2022, Hoggard was convicted of sexually assaulting the Ottawa woman.
On November 8, 2018, former drummer of the band Chris Crippin spoke out against Hoggard's behaviour during his time with the band. Crippin stated he was routinely called a "f*ggot" and was told to "shut the fuck up" when he tried to speak out. In a separate interview in July 2019, Crippin said that Hoggard was "extremely rude" and it wasn't behaviour he wanted to be around.
On October 20, 2022, Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard was sentenced to 5 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an Ottawa woman.

If it doesn't thrill you it doesn't matter anymore,
Bone shatter,
Baby don't go out this time
No matter where you been or who you are,
If it doesn't kill you it's sure to leave a horrible scar
Bones shatter,
So what's another stenge not a fan a million miles away?
And what's he gonna do to me that I haven't already seen?
You'll never stop me you know it's everything to me
You'll never stop 'cause we're only getting better,
We're not making this up so just write another letter,
I'll be fine
Alive again another day,
I'm not afraid to get over,
Never stop 'cause we're only getting better,
I'll be fine
I've been better,
I've seen a brighter side of life,
But any friend of the favors a friend of mine
Bones shatter,
Baby don't go out this time
So what's another stenge not a fan a million miles away?
And what's he gonna do to me that I haven't already seen?
You'll never stop me you know it's everything to me
You'll never stop 'cause we're only getting better,
We're not making this up so just write another letter,
I'll be fine
Alive again another day,
I'm not afraid to get over,
Never stop 'cause we're only getting better
I'll be fine
I'll be fine
You were everything to me
You were everything to me
You were everything to me
You were everything to me
You'll never stop 'cause we're only getting better,
We're not making this up so just write another letter,
I'll be fine
Alive again, another day,
I'm not afraid to get over,
Never stop 'cause we're only getting better,
I'll be fine
Alive again, another day,
A way to get over
(Alive again, another day)
A way to get over.
The lyrics of "Bones Shatter" by Hedley are a passionate expression of perseverance and determination despite past pain and difficulties. The song encourages the listener to keep going, even in the face of adversity, as long as one remains true to oneself. The haunting refrain of "bones shatter, fall apart and hit the floor" echoes the painful experiences that have been endured, but also implies that it's not enough to merely survive. To truly thrive, one must embrace life fully, even if it hurts, even if it leaves scars.
The song speaks to the idea of resilience and the importance of taking risks. It highlights the fact that sometimes we must face our fears head-on in order to grow and achieve our goals. Despite the inevitability of hardship, we are called upon to rise to the occasion and overcome any obstacle we may encounter. The chorus is a powerful anthem of overcoming adversity, stating that "you'll never stop me, you know it's everything to me", emphasizing the steadfast determination and grit it takes to succeed against the odds.
