Leave Me Alone
Helen Reddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Big old Ruby Red Dress
Wanders 'round the town
Talkin' to herself now
Sometimes sittin' down
Don't you get too close now
Ruby runs away
Poor old Ruby Red Dress
Born on a sorry day
I can hear her say

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
Now leave me alone
Oh, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Please leave me alone
Yes, leave me (leave me)

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
Now leave me alone
God, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Just leave me alone
Oh, leave me (leave me)

Big old Ruby Red Dress
Everybody laughs
Say she's got no future
And never made no past
Something hurt that Ruby
Something she can't bear
You look at her real close now
You see a little tear
Oh, when she says now

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
God, leave me alone
Oh, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Just leave me alone
Please leave me (leave me)

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
Now leave me alone
Oh, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Just leave me alone
Oh, leave me (leave me)

Some folks say some farm boy
Up from Tennessee
Taught it all to Ruby
Then just let her be
Her daddy tried to hide it
Tried to keep things cool
But something happened to Ruby
She broke down to a fool
Who just said now

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
Now leave me alone
Oh, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Please leave me alone
Yes, leave me (leave me)

Leave me alone (leave me alone)
Won't you leave me alone?
Please leave me alone (leave me alone)
Now leave me alone
God, leave me alone (leave me alone)
Just leave me alone

Please leave me (leave me)
Leave me alone (leave me alone)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Leave Me Alone" by Helen Reddy tell the story of a woman who wanders around town in a big ruby red dress, talking to herself and sometimes sitting down. She runs away from people who get too close to her and seems to be carrying some emotional pain that she can't bear. The townspeople laugh at her and say she has no future and no past. It is revealed that she was taught something by a farm boy from Tennessee, but her father tried to hide it and keep things cool. Whatever that something was caused Ruby to break down and become a fool who just wants to be left alone.

The song can be interpreted in many ways, but one possible interpretation is that it is about a woman who has experienced trauma or abuse and is now struggling with mental health issues as a result. The red dress could represent her pain or her attempts to hide it, while the townspeople's laughter could represent the stigma and lack of understanding surrounding mental illness. The song's repeated plea of "leave me alone" seems to be Ruby's way of asking for space and privacy to deal with her problems.

I miss the 70s when life was so simple no worries all we worried about was what we were going to get for our birthday and Christmas..

@kulturekritik9665

You don't remember the failure in Vietnam? Watergate? Staglfation? Cold War?

@davidschadeberg3786

@@kulturekritik9665 ... I wish I had, earlier... But they were there; ever present.

I totally understand πŸ˜” same here 😁

@mangarda

Lol that's the "good ole days" syndrome. Everyone thinks the era when they grew up was the "golden age." The 1970s weren't simple at all...it's just that YOUR life was simple because you were a child! But one thing I'll give you is that you had GREAT music.

Anyway, RIP Miss Reddy, we'll miss you...

I was very young when this song was first on the charts, but I remembered it through the decades, and it just makes me smile!

It's weird when you're a kid and loved this music but realize I am quickly catching up to my grandfather's age when he bought me this record almost 50 years ago - it's unbelievable

@adriasorensen2249

Dude right? What freaks me out is that we're closer to 2050 than 1950. Yikes
