Curtains
Hem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found a well
Lost for many years
It tasted sweet
I soaked my feet
And I was on my way

I could see him from the main road
In the flames of the motel
A darkened sky that carried my farewell

I traveled south
Across the Iron Bridge
I passed the signs
And tangled vines
And I was on my way

Sent him voices on a postcard
So he wouldn't know I'd gone
A folded bird who all my words fell on

Said, no sunlight on your window
No movement on your wall
Strip away these sad old curtains
And hear me call

It was a year
When I thought of him
Where I had gone
What I had done
And I was on my way

In the fall I dreamt of rescues
And my eyes began to burn
One final lie that swallowed my return

There's no hero at your window
There ain't no postcards on your wall

I'll strip away these sad old curtains
We hear you call

Overall Meaning

The song โ€œCurtainsโ€ by Hem is a beautiful tale of longing, nostalgia and melancholy. The first verse starts off with the singer finding a well after being lost for many years, which tasted sweet and made him/her soak his/her feet. The well is a metaphor for the hope and renewal that this person is seeking. It represents the emotional journey that they need to make in order to find a sense of peace and fulfillment. The journey continues as the person travels south, crossing Iron Bridge, passing the signs and tangled vines. The imagery of the Iron Bridge suggests a sense of solidity and strength, which is juxtaposed with the ephemeral nature of the signs and vines.

In the chorus, the singer mentions sending postcards to his/her love interest, so that he wouldn't know that they had left. The folded bird that all of their words fell on symbolizes the communication breakdown between the two individuals. From the second verse onwards, the singer talks about thinking of his/her love interest a year later, wondering where he/she has gone and what they had done. In the fall, the singer dreams of rescues, but it is one final lie that swallows his/her return. The last chorus is a plea for communication, stripping away the sad old curtains, and hearing the call.

Overall, the song is about the struggle to move on and let go, while still holding onto the hope that communication and connection will be possible in the future. It is haunting and beautiful at the same time, with lyrics that are both poetic and evocative.

Happy Wednesday! Hope you find these curtain tips helpful. How do you hem your drapes?

jumrat K

@K McCr8 Use a piece of fabric put over your lace before you press that way the glue from tape will not go through the iron.

I am just beginning to learn to sew on my machine but we gave lacy curtains and I don't know how to hem them. Will this tape work for lacy curtains? I am concerned about the adhesive going through the holes.

Hey quick question. Unfortunately I am at work and couldn't listen with volume on. Will this work on all types of drapes or just sheers. Secondly - I noticed how high you hung your drapes. Does this make the ceilings look higher or why do you hang them so high :) Thank you so very much!

Use the piece of fabric that you cut off to test the heat setting on the iron. Be sure that the heat you use will be high enough to make the tape adhere the 2 sides of the fabric together. Sometimes, the heat you need to make the tape work is too high for the fabric you have- so be careful and test first if possible. ALSO- this tape comes in different grades for different fabrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvIuzJq0wLo

Love this tutorial and found it helpful! I have a suggestion. If you find that the length of your curtains is uneven, instead of cutting off the amount needed minus 2 inches, just measure 2 inches from the fold where you want your finished length to be. That will give you the same 1 inch hem by folding up one inch and then folding up the 2nd inch which will be at the finished length measurement of your hem.
