Consequences
Hennessey Lyrics

I raise a glass to you, my dear, beleaguered friend
To the work you do, and the lives you must defend
You're two months in and still, no end in sight
To the armored legion you stave off every night

I hear the music you made
So clear -- and it does elate
I play what I know best
To all who show interest
I pray they get the messages

I hope my neighbors don't take it the wrong way
When I sing about how there's no one around
Or simply when I speak for a while
They like the words, but take issue with the style

Yet what you say does resound
I make a difference where it counts
To aid with their unrest
I play at their behest
I pray they get the messages

I raise a glass to you, my dear, beleaguered friend
To the work you do, and the lives you must defend
You're four months in and still, no end in sight
To the armored legion you stave off every night

I hope my neighbors don't take it the wrong way
When I sing about how there's no one around
But surely they must understand
Isolation was not planned

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, the lyrics express admiration and support for a friend who is engaged in challenging and dangerous work, likely related to defending lives or protecting others. They acknowledge the prolonged nature of their friend's commitment, as they mention that after two months there is still no end in sight. The phrase "armored legion" suggests a military or protective force that their friend is part of, and they recognize the immense effort their friend must put in every night.

The second verse seems to shift focus to the singer's own musical endeavors. They mention listening to the friend's music and how it brings joy and excitement. The singer then states that they play what they know best to those who show interest, hoping that their songs convey important messages. This could imply that the singer uses music as a means to express their own thoughts and emotions, hoping that their listeners will grasp the deeper meaning of their words.

The third verse returns to the theme of the friend's work and the impact it has on others. The singer acknowledges the potential misinterpretation or dislike some of their neighbors may have towards their singing, especially when they highlight the absence of people in their surroundings. However, they assert that the friend's words hold significance, and they themselves strive to make a difference in people's lives by playing music at their request. The final line of this verse expresses the hope that their messages are understood and received by the listeners.

The song comes full circle in the final verse, echoing the first verse's expressions of support and admiration for the friend. The singer once again raises a glass to honor their dear friend's work and the lives they protect. Similar to the first verse, they remark on the ongoing nature of their friend's commitment, emphasizing that after four months there is still no end in sight. The phrase "armored legion" is repeated, further highlighting the constant battle their friend faces every night.

The song ends with a brief reflective passage. The singer hopes that their neighbors will not misunderstand when they sing about the lack of people around, implying that they may feel isolated or alone. They suggest that their neighbors should understand that this isolation was not planned and was an unforeseen consequence of circumstances. The word "consequences" in the final line could point to the unintended outcomes or effects that have arisen due to the friend's work and the singer's own journey. It leaves the listener contemplating the challenges, sacrifices, and unintended outcomes that often accompany dedication and perseverance.

@Cocinemosjuntos

right now I am enjoying some fine cognac with just ice and chilling out.

@harrybhappy

What a great history lesson, your explanations were amazing and I’m grateful to have that information as someone who truly enjoys cognac

@benneuls4142

Totally agree. I learned a lot in this video. 👍👍

@jacobbarringer8977

I’ve always liked it because it brings back a nostalgic feeling of drinking it with my friends on the stoop. I eventually moved out of that area of town, into the suburbs, and no one around me drinks Cognac. I’ve always been curious as to why it tends to be a staple to my friends in my old neighborhood and black people as a whole. Thanks so much for the history lesson!

@6000hall

Honestly wondered why my great grandad would only drink the stuff. Makes sense since it was one of the only throwbacks to when he didn't have to worry about idiots being awful to him back home.

@Tmanaz480

I have to confess, as a white dude I've been a little afraid to even ask this question.

@sergelondon916

😆 bro its a question. Don't walk on eggshells.

@jyamez9069

This is exactly what I was looking for, great history lesson

@bill.t1722

Even same here in Sweden. I grew up in the suburbs of Stockholm and when I attended parties as a teen the only thing my black friends used to drink was Hennessy. While me and my white friends drank beer and vodka. I’ve always wondered if there was a reason behind this and then your video popped up. Great lesson 👍🏼

@sergelondon916

Same in the UK. Plus, rum as well.
