Mine
Henry King and his Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This love of mine goes on and on
Though life is empty since you have gone
You're always on my mind, though out of sight
It's lonesome through the day
And oh, the night

I cry my heart out, it's bound to break
Since nothing matters, let it break
I ask the sun and the moon
The stars that shine
What's to become of it
This love of mine

I cry my heart out, it's bound to break
Since nothing matters, so let it break
I ask the sun and the moon
The stars that shine
What's to become of it

This love of mine
This love of mine goes on

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Henry King and his Orchestra's song "Mine" convey the enduring nature of love despite the absence of the beloved. The singer expresses how their love continues to persist, even though their life feels empty after the departure of their loved one. Despite being out of sight, the absence of the loved one lingers in the singer's mind, making their days lonely and their nights even more difficult.

The first set of lyrics talks about the singer's emotional state, as they cry their heart out. The intensity of their emotions is so overwhelming that their heart feels like it is on the verge of breaking. The singer acknowledges that nothing seems to matter anymore, offering an acceptance of the emotional turmoil they are experiencing.

In the second set of lyrics, the singer reaches out to elements of nature—the sun, the moon, and the stars—that they may find solace or answers from. They seek the guidance of these celestial objects, hopeful that they can shed some light on the future of their love. The singer is desperate to know what will become of their love, seemingly uncertain about the possibility of reconciliation or moving on.

The repetition of the same set of lyrics in the song emphasizes the singer's deep emotional turmoil and their inability to find closure or resolution to their love. Despite the pain and uncertainty, the final line of the lyrics suggests that their love continues to endure, persisting on. It implies that their feelings remain strong and enduring, regardless of the circumstances.

Overall, these lyrics express the enduring, almost haunting nature of love in the absence of the beloved. It portrays the depth of the singer's emotions, characterized by loneliness, heartbreak, and a persistent longing for answers and resolution. The repetition further emphasizes the intensity of these feelings and how the singer's love persists despite the challenges they face.

The King band always seems to me to be on a cloud of its own, apart from all others. Unlike some of the rather bland, unobjectionable hotel orchestras, this aggregation had genuine musical sophistication rather than just a sheen or the "class" conferred by a string section. "Mine" has always been one of my favorite Gershwin tunes, and King's ethereal rendition is one of the best. I love how in the first, instrumental chorus it's the strings providing the answering counter-melody to the reeds' melody, while in the vocal chorus it's the woodwinds answering Mr Sudy. A very urbane affair!

Well said.

Joe Sudy was always good, with this band.

Used to hear this played when very young child. I liked it even then and never forgot it. Wow!

PS: Just noticed that this disc was 'not for radio broadcast'. What actually were these if not? (Curioser and curioser.) FGS I worked for the ABC and I ought to know but don't.

@benzo4029

Here he is, the Liberace of the 30s himself, Henry King, making a swank affair of this popular Gershwin show tune, his piano a bit more reserved and Duchin-like than his later recordings....,still a typical lavish hotel arrangement aimed to appeal to the pampered patrons and privileged parties of Pierre's positively posh Packard & Pierce Arrow polo playing set.
