Quite possibly the best film version of the play. Zeffirelli used the visual strengths of the two young stars who were so easy on the eye thus avoiding their weaknesses due to a lack of acting experience. Because they were 17 and 16 it worked and the film stunned audiences all over the world. He also chose a remarkably good supporting cast none of whom failed to deliver their parts. Yes, he cut the text a great deal and left out several important scenes; notably, Romeo killing Paris in Capulet's sepulcher and Romeo also buying the poison from the apothecary. Nina Rota's haunting soundtrack (by the way it did not win an Oscar) complimented the stunning cinematography and visual beauty of the film,

The reason I identify with this version of Romeo and Juliet is that my wife of 46 years and I were 16 and 17 when we first met! We experienced some of the young love that the Shakespearean couple experienced! I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to experience a similar joy and love! ❤️ Also, I saw this movie about a year before I met my future wife and prayed that God would grant me a Juliet! God, through His grace, granted me that wish! I am profoundly blessed and weep every time I see this video! Who says that Romeo and Juliet cannot have a happy ending! We did, despite our own personal tragedy, the loss of our only son!

I, like others, saw this beautiful movie as a young teenager of fourteen when it came out in 1968. I cried my heart out at the end. Not long afterwards I went back to see it a second time and started crying my heart out half way through the movie. The third time I started crying as soon as the curtain went up. The young cast were perfect.

Когда этот фильм шел у нас в кинотеатре,то мы на него раз 10 ходили.Помню было 2 серии и билеты стоили дорого.Как то умудрялись,ходили.Экономили с обедов школьных,у родителей просили,один раз у мамы,другой раз у папы.У папы много то у самого не было,так сдача с продуктов.Он все отдавал маме.Фильм,столько впечатлений произвел,песню из фильма,вся школа ходила мурлыкала.Красивый фильм!!!

А я ходила с девочками одноклассницами, а так как этот фильм имел откровенные сцены, то не всех пускали, с 14 лет, сейчас точно не помню, а я была самая маленькая по росту, и я вытягивала шею,чтобы казаться повыше, повзрослее, нас пропустили. Всю жизнь пересматриваю этот фильм.

I so remember seeing this movie when I was thirteen. My brother had to explain to me about the two feuding families, so I could understand the situation! He later became a high school history teacher. I love this song so much ! Thanks for the beautiful memories. 🌸🌟

We had Romeo and Juliet as one of our English set works at school and like most kids of my age, I was not really getting it. One day, the teacher wheeled in the projector and we watched this movie. Finally, through the incredible performances of these young actors, I got it. Have loved this movie ever since.

This song just all of a sudden popped into my head. Wasn't sure where I'd heard it before or what it was called. Whistled it to google and here I am. I watched this movie my freshman year in high school. I'm now 48 and why now of all times for it to come to mind. Can't say I was disappointed, it's a beautiful song.

Leonard Whiting also has an amazing voice. He sang with the Allan Parson’s Project album Edgar Allen Poe’s Tales and Mysteries of Imagination. The song is The Raven.
I loved the Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Romeo and Juliet. It is both timeless and a breathtakingly beautiful story of the star crossed lovers. And, Henry Mancini did a fabulous job of writing the score. It is truly a classic and well loved film.
