Liar
Henry Rollins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You think you're gonna live your life alone
In darkness
And seclusion
Yeah I know
You've been out there
Tried to mix with those animals
And it just left you full of humiliated confusion
So you stagger back home
And wait for nothing
But the solitary refinement of your room spits you back out onto the street
And now you're desperate
And in need of human contact
And then
You meet me
And you whole world changes
Because everything I say is everything you've ever wanted to hear
So you drop all your defenses and you drop all your fears
And you trust me completely
I'm perfect
In every way
Cause I make you feel so strong and so powerful inside
You feel so lucky
But your ego obscures reality
And you never bother to wonder why
Things are going so well
You want to know why?

'Cause I'm a liar
Yeah I'm a liar
I'll tear your mind out
I'll burn your soul
I'll turn you into me
I'll turn you into me
'Cause I'm a liar, a liar
A liar, a liar

I'll hide behind a smile
And understanding eyes
And I'll tell you things that you already know
So you can say
I really identify with you, so much
And all the time that you're needing me
Is just the time that I'm bleeding you
Don't you get it yet?
I'll come to you like an affliction
And I'll leave you like an addiction
You'll never forget me
You want to know why?
'Cause I'm a liar
Yeah I'm a liar
I'll rip your mind out
I'll burn your soul
I'll turn you into me
I'll turn you into me

'Cause I'm a liar, a liar
Liar, liar, liar, liar

I don't know why I feel the need to lie
And cause you so much pain
Maybe it's something inside
Maybe it's something I can't explain
'Cause all I do
Is mess you up and lie to you

I'm a liar
Oh, I am a liar

If you'll give me one more chance
I swear that I will never lie to you again
Because now I see the destructive power of a lie
They're stronger than truth
I can't believe I ever hurt you
I swear
I will never to you lie again, please
Just give me one more chance
I will never lie to you again
I swear
That I will never tell a lie
I will never tell a lie
No, no
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Sucker
Sucker!
Oh, sucker
I am a liar
Yeah, I am a liar
Yeah I like it
I feel good
Oh I am a liar
Yeah
I lie
I lie
I lie
Oh, I lie
Oh I lie
I lie
Yeah
Oh I'm a liar
I lie
Yeah
I like it
I feel good
I'll lie again
And again
I'll lie again and again

And I'll keep lying
I promise

Overall Meaning

The song "Liar" by Henry Rollins explores the theme of deception and the power that lies can hold over a person. The singer of the song claims to be a compulsive liar who manipulates others for his own gain, using flattery and false promises to gain their trust. He targets those who are vulnerable and isolated, promising to fill the gaps in their lives with his own version of reality. The singer's lies are so convincing that his victims are unable to see the truth, even when it is right in front of them.

The lyrics suggest that the singer's lies are a symptom of deeper psychological issues. He admits to feeling the need to lie and cause pain to others, even when he knows it is wrong. He also acknowledges the destructive power that lies can hold. The song ends with the singer begging for forgiveness and promising to never lie again, but it is unclear whether he is sincere or not.

Overall, "Liar" is a chilling portrayal of the psychological manipulation and damage that lies can cause in personal relationships. It illustrates the importance of being aware of the signs of deception and of having the courage to confront dishonesty when it is revealed.

My list of relevant songs from that time period, runs like this -
Henry Rollins Band: Liar and L. S. O. (Low Self Opinion).
Pantera:Mouth For War, Broken, and Domination.
Ministry:Just One Fix.
Megadeth: Foreclosure Of A Dream.

These are songs that I see as relevant, and that challenge me, as a person, to live better, and to live above the level that I was at...as well as being extremely careful, as to who I listen to, when it comes to my life choices.
This song, "Liar", exposes certain "Authority figures", such as Law and Religion, for any of the mutual crud that they've spread around over their respective timelines. I believe in steering clear of "Religions" and different facets of "Law Enforcement", when the case arises, as to how certain "Law Enforcement Officers" break their own laws for any reason, and start treading on the rights and persons that they do, for any unreasonable needs and means that gratify only themselves.
That's me, in a nutshell: Live the best life that I can, and helping others when needed.

Henry Rollins attempted to teach me this valuable life lesson in the 90s and I regret not taking it more seriously. A lot of heartache could've been avoided had I only listened the first time.

@NessaPhillips

I came to listen to this video today because I was literally thinking the same thing.

The BEST video ever made, and not just for hardcore Rollins fans. For victims of narcissistic abuse, this is pure gold.

@mrmegachonks3581

Amen, came back to this for that very reason. ❤

@unassailable6138

The Dude knew about Love Bombing and Narcissistic abuse in the 90's lol.

@TellThemJohnnyWaddIsHere

Regrettably, back around the time "Weight" came out (1993-1994), I was an immature 20 something who was the one inflicting the narcissistic abuse on an ex-girlfriend. Fortunately, I grew up and now I see what an asshole I was.
