… Read Full Bio ↴Hepcat are a third wave ska band formed in southern California in 1989.
Their soulful harmonies and mellow rhythms were unlike those of contemporaries and more akin to musicians from the heyday of 1960s Jamaican ska, also referred to as the first wave.
Hepcat's debut album, "Out of Nowhere" was released in 1994 on New York-based ska label Moon Records. Two years later, they followed it up with "Scientific" on BYO Records. In 1998, after signing with Epitaph Records subsidiary HellCat Records, they released "Right on Time," scoring a modest hit with the swinging "No Worries" and scored a spot on the Vans Warped Tour. 2000 saw the release of "Push n' Shove," their first album without founding members Raul Talavera and Alex Désert, although the latter appears as a guest vocalist on two tracks.
The band went on indefinite hiatus after 2000, and no new material has surfaced since. Trumpeter Kincaid Smith formed Soul Traffic, a five-piece funk band. Drummer Scott Abels has played with the Rancid side project Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards and the southern California reggae act The Aggrolites. Vocalist Alex Desert has had a successful career in film and television, appearing in the movies PCU, Swingers, and High Fidelity; and the television show Becker.
In early 2004, a remastered version of Out of Nowhere was released with two additional bonus tracks, an early version of "Nigel" and "Club Meditation," both of which appeared on their first single. Occasionally, Hepcat reconvenes to play a few shows a year in the California area. Often, this lineup is that which performed on "Scientific."
They take their name from a term for a 1940s-50s jazz musician.

Our eyes meet and we already miss
Holding hands, strollin' down the shore
Rolling in the sand say "I love you", once more..
What does it matter still my heart grows weak..
As we stroll down Goodbye Street
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I wanna be the one for you...
Walkin' alone makes me feel so blue...
Everything reminds me so much of you
Others lovers pass me by,
Surely they can see a tear in my eye
I wonder how can this be?
I let your love slip away from me...
Now I have to sit and wonder:
Do you love some other guy?
Do we share these lonely feelings?
I can't deal with the pain
That's the reason why
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I want to walk along with you..
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I wanna be the one for you..
Now I have to sit and wonder
Do you love some other guy?
Do we share these lonely feelings?
I can't deal with the pain
That's the reason why
Never so hard did love ever try,
As she did with you and I
I'll hold you close and
Then I'll say goodbye
Oh won't you give this love
Just one more try.
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I want to walk along with you..
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I wanna be the one for you..
I don't wanna walk alone girl (I don't wanna walk alone)
I want to walk along with you.. with you..
The Hepcat's song "Goodbye Street" is a heartfelt ballad about the pain of a broken relationship and the desire to reconcile. The singer reminisces about the moments they shared with their partner as they take a final walk down memory lane, symbolized by "Goodbye Street." The coffee and the loving kiss at the beginning of the song signify the finality of the separation, and their eyes meeting expresses the regret and sorrow they both feel. As they stroll down the shore, the singer remembers the blissful moments they shared, including holding hands and rolling in the sand while confessing their love to each other.
However, their heart grows weak despite these memories, knowing that they are about to part ways. The singer is afraid of walking alone and wants to be with their partner. Walking alone reminds them of their partner, making them feel blue and lonely. The singer sees other couples walking by, reminding them of what they have lost. They wonder if their partner is with someone else, and if they feel the same lonely feelings as they do. The pain of not being with their partner is too much to bear, and they cannot deal with the thought of losing them.
The singer pleads for their partner to give their love one more chance, holding onto hope that they can reconcile and be together. The repetition of "I don't wanna walk alone girl, I want to walk along with you" and "I wanna be the one for you" highlights their desire to be with their partner and not have to walk alone anymore. Overall, the song is about the pain of lost love and wanting to fix the relationship.
