2. Her Majesty is a Dutch tribute band named after a Beatles song. Initially, they mostly covered songs by The Beatles, but things really took off for them when (in the 2015-2016 season) they toured Dutch theatres with a tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, to overwhelming critical and public acclaim. The group's CSNY show was released as a live album, Déjà Vu Live.
Her Majesty is fronted by three well-known musicians: Jelle Paulusma (of Daryll-Ann fame), Bertolf Lentink and Diederik Nomden (who recorded with Johan, Daryll-Ann, Awkward I and Bertolf, amongst others, and released his own album under the moniker Royal Parks). Bauke Bakker (drums) and Dirk Schreuders (bass) complete the line-up.

Her Majesty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's struggling to breathe through the fumes
She wears her hear out on her chest
She thinks that others know what's best
We've seen those like her before
We've never looked back as they've passed
We are all like them deep inside
Still we don't try to make a change
She's struggling to breathe through the fumes
She wears her hear out on her chest
She thinks that others know what's best
Still we claim to know what's best
The opening lines of the song paint a vivid picture of isolation and struggle, as the singer is described as being "all alone in a crowded room" and "struggling to breathe through the fumes." These lyrics suggest a sense of suffocation and feeling overwhelmed by one's surroundings. The imagery of wearing her heart on her chest conveys vulnerability and openness, but also hints at a sense of naivety or trusting others too easily. The line "She thinks that others know what's best" speaks to a lack of self-confidence or assertiveness, relying on external opinions rather than trusting her own judgement.
The repetition of these lines underscores the sense of loneliness and struggle that the singer is experiencing, reinforcing the idea that she is not only physically isolated but also emotionally disconnected from those around her. The mention of having seen others like her before, but never looking back as they passed, suggests a pattern of indifference or apathy towards those who may be going through similar challenges. This could reflect a broader societal tendency to overlook or dismiss individuals who are struggling, rather than offering support or understanding.
The lyrics then take a poignant turn by acknowledging that "we are all like them deep inside," suggesting a universal experience of vulnerability and self-doubt that we all carry within us. Despite this shared humanity, the song highlights a reluctance or resistance to making a change or reaching out to help others who may be struggling. This contrast between internal empathy and external action adds complexity to the narrative, raising questions about the barriers that prevent us from connecting with and supporting those in need.
In the final lines, the singer is once again described as being "all alone in a crowded room," emphasizing the persistence of her isolation despite being surrounded by others. The repetition of the earlier lines, along with the added detail that "Still we claim to know what's best," suggests a sense of hypocrisy or false confidence in our ability to understand and support others. This self-awareness of our own limitations and shortcomings in truly empathizing with others serves as a powerful commentary on the human experience and the often challenging nature of genuine connection and compassion.
