Golden Gate
Herb Wiedoeft & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are talking of Heaven
When you talk of the West
And as a sample of Heaven
California is best, da-da-da-da
I'm getting tired of the rain and snow
My weary brain is cryin' Westward-Ho
Train pulls out at eleven
For that rose-covered nest

Oh, Golden Gate, da-da-da-da, I'm comin' to ya
Golden Gate, da-da-da-da, sing Hallelujah
I'll live in the sun, boom-boom, love in the moon
Where every month is June
A little sun-kissed blonde, da-da-da-da, is comin' my way
Just beyond that Lincoln Highway
I'm goin' strong now, it won't be long now
Open up that Golden Gate

Mountains and mountains, rivers and fountains
Rocks that are aged and worn
Acre after acre of the richest soil
A hundred million billion barrels of oil
Prairies and prairies, cattle and dairies
Under a heaven of blue
And right at the tail, the end of the trail
Thousands of boats sailing through that

Golden Gate, da-da-da-da, I'm comin' to ya
(Come on, get hot!)
Golden Gate, da-da-da-da, sing Hallelujah
I'll live in the sun, ah, love in the moon
Where every, where every month, every month is June
A little sun-kissed blonde is comin' my way
Right beyond that Lincoln Highway

I'm goin' strong now, it won't be long now
Open up that Golden, Golden Gate

Overall Meaning

The Herb Wiedoeft & His Orchestra's song Golden Gate is a celebration of the beauty and allure of California. The lyrics describe the West Coast as a taste of heaven and California as the best example of it. The singer expresses his exhaustion with the rain and snow and longs for the beauty and warmth of California. He is determined to make his way West to live in the sun, where every month is June and he can find love under the moon. The final destination for the singer is the Golden Gate, which he implores to be opened up to him. The bridge symbolizes not just the physical gateway to California but a spiritual one, and the singer feels that once he crosses it, he will have entered a new paradise.

The lyrics of this song not only celebrate the beauty of California but they also portray the idea of the American Dream, with its focus on moving westward in search of a better life. The singer yearns to leave behind the cold and dreary weather of his current home and believes that California holds the promise of riches, success, and love. The song also praises the natural beauty of California, with its mountains, rivers, and fertile soil. It speaks to the deep connection that people can feel to a place and their willingness to travel great distances in search of a better life.

I agree! I've got a copy of the Jolson version on CD and I've played the grooves off of it! Jolson sings it like a hymn to California and the robust prospects of that part of the 20th Century in America.

I like the way the recording seems stereo..what a great bass sound!

I agree with D. This makes me want to hop a flight to SF at this very moment. My favorite bridge. Walked across it many years ago, got dizzy and almost turned back in mid-bridge, then realized that would be just as far as going all the way to Sausalito, from where I took the bus back.

thank you for honoring my cousin Herb Weidoeft.

But, the bridge wasn't built until the late 30's was it......I always connect the song with the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco and movie of l936 .....................
