Herbert began creating music with found objects whilst at Exeter University (UK) in the 1990s, where he studied Drama. From bottles, books, and pepper pots he progressed to recording places and experiences, effectively using the sampler as an instrument on many of his Doctor Rockit and Herbert releases. This style evolved into the overtly political when he began sampling objects from McDonald's and The Gap as a protest against corporate globalism on the The Mechanics Of Destruction album. The CD was distributed free at concerts and available as a free download and has never been available in stores.
His 2003 Big Band album, Goodbye Swingtime combined the political commentary of Radioboy with the song structure of his Herbert albums. Recorded with sixteen musicians from the British jazz world, including saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Nigel Hitchcock and bassist Dave Green, the band is complemented on stage by long-term vocal partner Dani Siciliano and occasionally Arto Lindsay and Warp recording artist, Jamie Lidell. Recently he has provided music for a number of films, including Dogme director Kristian Levring's The Intended along with original music for TV. Herbert's newest album Plat du Jour addresses world famine.

Herbert Lyrics

You never even said, you never even said, you never even said goodbye
When I look back I don't wanna remember anything but the good times
Laughs and jokes, smiles and smokes, as we racked up hella miles
You were there for me when nobody believed that I'd ever find my own sound
That I'd get out of my hometown
But now you're not around, the road's never as fun now
For those of us left behind, how are we supposed to feel now
(Never even said goodbye)
For those of us left behind, how are we supposed to feel now
That you're gone, you can't come home, and you never even said goodbye
(Never even said goodbye)
It's hard to not be mad when you promised, that you didn't need help when we offered
Even when shit got so dark it was obvious, like when I asked if you were the one that robbed me
I knew it was you else who else could it be
But I took your word for it since it's not like I could see, or ever saw you stooping that low
We were raised better than that, I know you know
I don't get how it turned out like this, were close like family
clways had your back, you knew damn well you could always turn to me,
Wish I knew where it all went wrong, wish I knew where it fell apart
I was there all along, so how could I've been so in the dark
For those of us left behind, how are we supposed to feel now
That you're gone, you can't come home, and you never even said goodbye
For those of us left behind, how are we supposed to feel now
(Never even said goodbye)
That you're gone, you can't come home, and you never even said goodbye
(Never even said goodbye)
Never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said goodbye
(Never even said goodbye)
Never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said, you never even said goodbye
(Never even said goodbye)
cll that time that we spent and it's still not enough
Feel so lost and so broken, I just wanna give up
How can I go on without you, I'm perpetually stuck
'Cause you never even said goodbye
(Never even said goodbye)
You know I would've been right there
You know I'd pulled up anywhere
To avoid this fucking nightmare
Where you never even said goodbye
(Never even said Goodbye)
cll that time that we spent and it's still not enough
Feel so lost and so broken, I just wanna give up
How can I go on without you, I'm perpetually stuck
'Cause you never even said goodbye
You know I would've been right there
You know I'd pulled up anywhere
To avoid this fucking nightmare
Where you never even said goodbye
(You never even said Goodbye)
You never even said
You never even said
You never even said
You never even said
The lyrics of Herbert's song "Even" depict the singer's feelings of betrayal and confusion after someone close to them unexpectedly leaves without saying goodbye. The song explores the aftermath of this departure and the impact it has on the singer and those left behind. The lyrics reflect a mix of emotions, including sadness, anger, and a sense of abandonment.
The song begins with the repetition of "You never even said goodbye," emphasizing the shock and hurt the singer feels from the sudden departure. They express a desire to remember only the good times shared with this person, highlighting the laughter, jokes, smiles, and companionship that was once present. The lyrics mention how this person was there for the singer when nobody believed in their talents and dreams, acknowledging the support they provided in pursuing their own path.
However, the second verse reveals a darker side to the relationship. The singer hints at moments of mistrust and confrontation, mentioning an incident where they suspected this person of robbing them. Despite these doubts, the singer took their word for it, showing a sense of loyalty that now feels misguided. The lyrics express the singer's frustration about not understanding how things turned out this way and feeling in the dark about the true nature of their connection.
Overall, the song explores themes of betrayal, trust, and the pain caused by the absence of closure. It delves into the complex emotions experienced when someone you once relied on suddenly vanishes without explanation.
