Herbert began creating music with found objects whilst at Exeter University (UK) in the 1990s, where he studied Drama. From bottles, books, and pepper pots he progressed to recording places and experiences, effectively using the sampler as an instrument on many of his Doctor Rockit and Herbert releases. This style evolved into the overtly political when he began sampling objects from McDonald's and The Gap as a protest against corporate globalism on the The Mechanics Of Destruction album. The CD was distributed free at concerts and available as a free download and has never been available in stores.
His 2003 Big Band album, Goodbye Swingtime combined the political commentary of Radioboy with the song structure of his Herbert albums. Recorded with sixteen musicians from the British jazz world, including saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Nigel Hitchcock and bassist Dave Green, the band is complemented on stage by long-term vocal partner Dani Siciliano and occasionally Arto Lindsay and Warp recording artist, Jamie Lidell. Recently he has provided music for a number of films, including Dogme director Kristian Levring's The Intended along with original music for TV. Herbert's newest album Plat du Jour addresses world famine.

keep pulling the blinds down
turn up the surround sound
lay back in the low chair
transported to nowhere
oh what is it you'll have me do?
what is it i'll have to do?
boy
talk through the silence
and humour the violence
consider this frame now
make me the same now
oh what is it you want me to?
what is it i'll have to do?
show me where the mark is
show me where the mic goes
show me where my room is
show me where the food goes
tell me how to kiss you
tell me where my hand goes
tell me when it's over
tell me if my tit shows
show me how to cry now
show me how to kneel down
show me how to be hit
show me how to fall down
tell me how to learn lines
tell me how to fake it
tell me how to read signs
tell me how to make it
it's just like a movie
direct me in it
it's just like a movie
dress me up in it
it's just like a movie
cut the bits you don't like out
it's really like a movie
make me up in it
i wanna be that equal
don't think about the sequel
or a hotdog with it
boy
i'm feeling like a movie star
direct you in it
i'm feeling like i could go far
make you up in it
i'm feeling like a movie star
cut the bits i won't like out
i'm really feeling like i could go far
direct you in it
and a hotdog with it
boy
i'm up for the lead role
i'm up for a lost soul
consider the bad guys
remember their dark eyes
oh what is it you'll have me do?
what is it i'll have to do?
boy
i'll be there at the crime scene
a trick for halloween
i'm happy to bare all
i'm happy to play cruel
oh what is it you'll have me do?
what is it i'll have to do?

take me to your agent

The song "Movie Star" by Herbert is a commentary on the commercialization and commodification of fame in the entertainment industry. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of someone willing to do whatever it takes to become a movie star, even if it means sacrificing their own identity and integrity. The singer of the song is willing to be directed, dressed up, and cut down to fit into the mold of what Hollywood considers to be a star. They are willing to endure pain and humiliation in order to be successful.
The chorus of the song, "it's just like a movie, direct me in it, dress me up in it, cut the bits you don't like out, make me up in it," highlights how the entertainment industry constructs an image of a celebrity and creates hype and drama around them to maintain their fame. The singer is willing to submit to this process, even if it means losing their individuality and authenticity.
The song also includes references to the darker aspects of the movie industry, such as crime scenes and playing cruel characters. This suggests that the entertainment industry is not only focused on creating a polished image of celebrities but also is willing to exploit dark and troubling content for entertainment purposes.
Overall, "Movie Star" is a scathing critique of the movie industry's obsession with fame and its willingness to dehumanize and exploit individuals to maintain that fame.
