Herbert began creating music with found objects whilst at Exeter University (UK) in the 1990s, where he studied Drama. From bottles, books, and pepper pots he progressed to recording places and experiences, effectively using the sampler as an instrument on many of his Doctor Rockit and Herbert releases. This style evolved into the overtly political when he began sampling objects from McDonald's and The Gap as a protest against corporate globalism on the The Mechanics Of Destruction album. The CD was distributed free at concerts and available as a free download and has never been available in stores.
His 2003 Big Band album, Goodbye Swingtime combined the political commentary of Radioboy with the song structure of his Herbert albums. Recorded with sixteen musicians from the British jazz world, including saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Nigel Hitchcock and bassist Dave Green, the band is complemented on stage by long-term vocal partner Dani Siciliano and occasionally Arto Lindsay and Warp recording artist, Jamie Lidell. Recently he has provided music for a number of films, including Dogme director Kristian Levring's The Intended along with original music for TV. Herbert's newest album Plat du Jour addresses world famine.
We're in Love

Nothing could replace what formed it now
Just enough in its finest moment
Glorious for a thing that's stolen now
And though we can't believe it
We built a world to breathe it
And when we need to face it
We're in love
We’re in love
You know it's the best
When you've laid it to rest
Use it with me
Lose it with me
Consider this in your fancy car and (consider)
Consider this in your members only bar (consider this)
Will you miss your flight to China (will you)
Does the end have smart designer
And though we might not make it
We love ourselves to fake it
And now we may have lost it
We can't be here
We're in love
We’re in love
You know it's the best
When you've laid it to rest
Use it with me
Lose it with me
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
Use it with me, use it with you
I just wanna know
Lose it with me, lose it with you
I just wanna know
Use it with me, use it with you
I just wanna know
I just wanna know
Use it with me, use it with you, use it
Use it with me, use it with you, use it
Use it with me, use it with you, use it
I just wanna know
The song We're in Love by Herbert is a reflection on the power of love in our lives. The opening lines, "Nothing could prepare us for it, Nothing could replace what formed it now," express the overwhelming nature of love - it is something that cannot be planned for or replaced. The song acknowledges the beauty of love, and how it can be "glorious for a thing that's stolen now" - referencing that love can be a fleeting feeling, that often disappears as quickly as it appeared.
The second verse delves into the idea that even though love can be fleeting, we still build a world around it, and often fake it to get by. "And though we might not make it, We love ourselves to fake it, And now we may have lost it, We can't be here" acknowledges the pain involved in realizing that love may be lost, but also the power of love to force us to fake it until we make it.
Overall, the song We're in Love is a contemplative piece on the nature of love, and how it can change our lives. The use of repetition in the chorus, "We're in love" reinforces the idea that love can be an all-consuming force in our lives. Ultimately, the song asks the listener to consider their own relationship with love and what it means to them.
