If You Knew
Hilary and Kate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know you like the back of my hand
And you hurt me like a game gone to plan.

Can’t help notice the flags were there I saw a few
Kept them to myself I cared too much for you
Drugged up and numb, ran on routine,
Slept right through my days went blind
For you
For you
For you
Walking through her days she’s blind to

You (x20)
Walking through her days she’s blind to
You (x20)
Walking through her days she’s blind to

You knew me, entertained me like a guest
And you hurt me, like a stranger at best.

Won't leave a mark, can't pick my brain
You might check-in, get some pleasure from my pain.
You'll find yourself, a step behind
The girl you knews walking through her days she's blind

To you
To you
To you
Walking through her days she’s blind to

You (x20)
Walking through her days she’s blind to
You (x20)
Walking through her days she’s blind to

You (x16)
You (x16)

Won't leave a mark, can't pick my brain
You might check-in, get some pleasure from my pain
You'll find yourself, a step behind
The girl you knews walking through her days she's blind to

You (x20)
Walking through her days she’s blind to
You (x20)
Walking through my days I’m blind to you.

To you
To you

To you
Walking through my days I’m blind to you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "If You Knew" by Hilary and Kate express a sense of betrayal and the pain that comes with it. The singer is in a relationship with someone who hurt them intentionally and knowingly. The opening lines, "I know you like the back of my hand, and you hurt me like a game gone to plan," suggest that the singer is aware of their partner's true nature and manipulative ways.

The second stanza reveals that the singer saw the warning signs but chose to ignore them. They noticed the flags that indicated that their partner might not be as trustworthy as they seemed, but the singer still cared for them too much to act on it. The lyrics "Kept them to myself, I cared too much for you, drugged up and numb, ran on routine, slept right through my days went blind" express the singer's numbness and sense of detachment from reality as a result of the relationship.

The chorus repeats the line "Walking through her days she's blind to you," reinforcing the idea that the singer is unaware of their partner's true intentions and continues to engage in a relationship that is harmful to them. The second verse echoes the first with the lines, "You knew me, entertained me like a guest, and you hurt me like a stranger at best," emphasizing that the relationship was built on deception.

Overall, the lyrics of "If You Knew" convey a sense of betrayal, pain, and isolation. The singer is stuck in a relationship that they know is harmful to them but can't seem to break free from. I just recently discover Hillary and Kate. A friend gave me a cd they purchased quite a while back while seeing them at a church. This song is on the CD. I've been listening to the same cd for a month now and truly haven't tired of it yet. I wish they had more music available!
