I Hear A Rhapsody
His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And when I hear you call
So softly to me
I don't hear a call at all
I hear a rhapsody

And when your sparkling eyes
Are smiling at me
Then soft through the starlit skies
I hear a rhapsody

My days are so blue
When you're away
My heart longs for you
So won't you stay

My darling hold me tight
And whisper to me

Then soft through a starry night
I'll hear a rhapsody

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of 'I Hear A Rhapsody' by His Orchestra evoke a sense of deep emotional connection and longing between two individuals. The opening lines, "And when I hear you call, so softly to me, I don't hear a call at all, I hear a rhapsody," suggest that the mere sound of the beloved's voice transcends ordinary communication and instead becomes a source of inspiration and beauty, akin to a musical composition. The word "rhapsody" typically denotes an ecstatic or exalted feeling, reflecting the intensity of the singer's emotions.

The following stanza describes the impact of the beloved's gaze, with the mention of "sparkling eyes" that "are smiling at me." This imagery conveys a sense of warmth and affection, further enhanced by the reference to the "starlit skies." The connection between the lovers is portrayed as something ethereal and magical, as if their interactions are accompanied by a symphony of emotions and sensations that transcend the physical realm.

As the lyrics progress, the longing and yearning in the singer's heart become more pronounced. The lines "My days are so blue when you're away, my heart longs for you, so won't you stay" express a deep sense of loss and incomplete without the presence of the beloved. The plea for the beloved to stay indicates a strong desire for their companionship and a reluctance to be apart, highlighting the depth of the emotional bond between them.

The final stanza reinforces the theme of intimacy and emotional connection, with the singer yearning for physical closeness and tender words from their beloved. The line "My darling hold me tight and whisper to me" conveys a sense of vulnerability and a need for reassurance, while the imagery of a "starry night" evokes a sense of romance and enchantment. The repetition of "I'll hear a rhapsody" underscores the idea that the singer's world is transformed by the presence and love of their beloved, turning ordinary moments into something sublime and transcendent.

I have been binging on old music, and just wanted to thank you. This was during my mother's time, but I always loved this music to. Thanks for the great old tunes!

You are most welcome.....glad that you're enjoying the presentation.

Though I think the Barnet band's still more dramatic arrangement of this beauty is the better of the two, I prefer this Bob's vocal to Bob Carroll's on the other one. Mr. Eberly was at the peak of his powers, vocally and interpretively, at this time.
