Numb
Holly McNarland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chase destruction of your own emotions
And your need for love, makes you easy prey
Safety of a rubber glove seems much too simple
Climbing up and down, waiting for the day
You can't see if I'm not listening
You can't hear with my eyes open
I can hate with my eyes open
I feel better when I'm numb

Chase distraction of your own existence
Keep it clean, clean enough to stab
Lick your own wounds, anxious for the next one
Cry for more pain, heal what you have
You can't see if I'm not listening
You can't hear with my eyes open
I can't hate with my eyes open
I feel better when I'm numb

Just another hit for the one you love
If you cared at all, you'd put me down
Wake up dead man, can't you see I'm starving
You can't see if I'm not listening
You can't hear with my eyes open
I can't hate with my eyes open
I feel better when I'm numb

I feel better
I feel better when I'm numb

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Holly McNarland’s song “Numb” are quite dark and evoke a sense of emotional turmoil. The song delves into the concept of numbing oneself to avoid feeling pain or emotions. The opening lines of “chase destruction of your own emotions” suggest that the singer is actively trying to prevent themselves from experiencing emotions. The next line “and your need for love, makes you easy prey” hints that the singer may have experienced love that has resulted in pain or trauma. The line “safety of a rubber glove seems much too simple” adds to the overall sense of numbness - even the seemingly simplest things feel too complicated when emotions are avoided. The singer is waiting for “the day” when they can finally feel something again, however, the pain they have experienced has made it difficult for them to know what emotions are genuine.

The chorus of the song, “You can’t see if I'm not listening, You can’t hear with my eyes open, I can hate with my eyes open, I feel better when I'm numb” carries a strong message about the numbness that the singer is experiencing. They cannot see or hear anything, and the only emotion they can feel makes them feel better is hate. The line “Chase distraction of your own existence, keep it clean enough to stab” further emphasizes the singer’s attempt to numb themselves. They are not only avoiding emotions, but they are also actively distracting themselves from their existence. The line “lick your own wounds, anxious for the next one, cry for more pain, heal what you have” once again highlights the singer's willingness to keep numbing themselves even if it causes more pain in the long run. The final verse describes the singer’s relationship with someone else, and how they are willing to be a “hit” for the one they love. This relationship seems to be causing them more harm than good, and they wish that the person they care about would finally “put them down”.

Holly made a big impact on the Canadian rock scene which was already historic in the mid 90's. She's lumped in with what I call "The Great Dead Canadian Bands," although she didn't get a chance to sell out like a lot of them. Noteable performance was Edgefest 97 I think, when she played an afternoon spot on the big stage. We were blown away by not only the quality of her vocals, but her staying power! She rocked it hard. :)

Caleb Drew I was at that show! "Coward" made me an instant fan, and I bought her album shortly after.

It was the Vancouver one, and I am still smitten to this day! :) Tea Party just off their Transmission tour was another stand out that day.

She never made a impact like at 256k views I don't think so, I think it's a unheard track

Tredal Racette Hi. 256k for one song is good for a Canadian artist. The US has 10x the population, and has a great deal more artistic exposure. That would be the equivalent of over 2million views for a US artist in the US alone. Remember that this song came out in the mid 90's, so it is past its heyday, meaning it is not searched for like a modern track. The 256k does not quite hint at the radioplay and touring opportunities Holly got in the 90's. She had more of an effect than the 256k indicates.

My favourite female vocalist of all-time. Something I just love about her voice!

It's driven by raw emotions and passion.
That is something SERIOUSLY LACKING in todays music scene. It's now about $$$$$ not about the music.
That's why her voice stands above to those who hear the true music.

I was in a band with Holly for a short time before she was signed. We used to sit around writing and she generously sang our songs that we wrote and it was like we'd never heard our own songs before. When she sang them she transformed them, I'm not exaggerating. It was magic. Her voice was like a gift from the universe. There was no question that she was going to get signed. She just happened to also be a very cool person. It's one of my life's real regrets that I didn't have more time to write and create with Holly.
