Answering Machine
Holmes Rupert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little while ago I went and placed a call
To tell this girl I know that she could have it all
The wedding, the ring, the whole darn thing, I was willing to tie the knot
So I called her up, and this is the answer I got:

[Chorus]
"I'm so sorry you have just reached my answering machine,
I'm not in at present, I'm sure you know the whole routine.
Leave your name and number, and I'll try to get back to you;
You have 30 seconds to talk to me before you're through."

And I said,
"Baby let's go get married, I need to hear you're mine.
I am hanging on, I am hanging on, I am hanging on this line.
And if I can leave one message before you go to bed,
I would say to you...:"

And the phone went dead.

So I stepped out to buy some dog food for the cat.
Of course she called about three minutes after that.
Would she be my wife and share my life? Well of course you can write the
Plot,
Cause she called me up, and this is the answer she got:

[Chorus]

And she said,
"Baby I got your message, I am answering your call.
I have thought it out, I have thought it out, and I think that, all-in-all
If you ask if we can marry, and make it for all time,
Then my answer is, "

And the phone went,

"I'm so sorry, you have just reached my answering machine..."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Holmes Rupert's song Answering Machine tell the story of a man who called a girl he knew to confess his love and propose to her. He offers her everything - wedding, ring, and the whole package, ready to tie the knot with her. However, when he calls, he hears her answering machine, which informs him that she is not available at that moment, and he should leave a message after the beep. The man is surprised and a little disappointed, but he decides to record a message expressing his feelings and asking her to get married. Unfortunately, as soon as he ends his message, the phone goes dead.

The man goes out to buy some dog food for his cat, and three minutes later, the girl calls back. This time, she informs him that she had received his message, thought it over, and decided to accept his proposal. However, before she could say her answer, the phone gets cut off, and her answering machine message plays again. The song ends with the girl's voice repeating her answering machine message, and the man left hanging and wondering how to proceed.

The fact that all of his songs told a story makes it no surprise that Rupert Holmes is now enjoying a wonderful career as both an author and playwright.

The chord progressions especially on the verses are unpredictible.  As a matter of fact, I'd say that's a calling card for RH.  He's a very refreshing artist.

The recording engineering was delightful, the DTMF dial tone, and answering machine beep. LOL  I love this song...I would have loved to have been in the recording studio when this was made!

@kingofallwhites DualToneMultiFrequency means touchtones which always a combination of two tones in one so that it is difficult to misinterpret......

kingofallwhites

What is DTMF?

John Sahaj
