High
Holy Mother Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Huge success
The kind that makes you wonder
I am no test
Repossed
I'm under, I am nowhere
A solitary way
Huge success you never gave away
What if I were high
What if you were evil
What if I were high
What if you were evil
I am haunted
Cool September wind
Fools flaunted
Who cares about sleepin'
Cold numbers in order
Fire in my water
Kept it spinning in my bed
What if I were high
What if you were evil

What if I were high
What if you were evil

Overall Meaning

The song "High" by Holy Mother is a contemplative and introspective track that delves into the themes of success, isolation, and temptation. The lyrics reflect the perspective of someone who has achieved a considerable level of success, but may feel that they have lost something along the way. The opening lines of "Huge success, the kind that makes you wonder, I am no test, reposessed, I'm under, I am nowhere" suggest that the singer is struggling with the fleeting nature of success, unable to fully enjoy their accomplishments for fear of losing it all. The following lines, "A solitary way, huge success you never gave away" emphasize the sense of loneliness and isolation that comes from reaching the top.

The chorus repeats a thought-provoking question concerning temptation: "What if I were high, what if you were evil?" This line suggests that the singer may be grappling with the idea of giving into temptation, of falling from grace or succumbing to "evil." The bridge continues with a vivid imagery and paradoxical imagery of the "cool September wind, fools flaunted, who cares about sleepin', cold numbers in order, fire in my water, kept it spinning in my bed." The lines juxtapose a sense of apathy with a restless, almost feverish feeling.

Overall, "High" is a song that speaks to the struggles inherent in success, and the temptation to sacrifice one's values for the sake of achievement. It is a reminder that even in moments of great success, one's true worth and purpose may be lost along the way.

Never thought I would see Pavorotti and Clapton on stage together. This is an amazing and powerful performance.

@kendavies945

Agreed, shame the lyrics are such crap. They should have chosen a better song. That would have been so easy.

I agree 👍

@Ken Davies I don’t know why you and Patsy Tate (who gave your comment a 👍 a month ago) think the lyrics are such ‘crap’?! I, and many others, think they are beautiful, as well as the performance! I believe (and hope others agree with me) that you are the minority of listeners with YOUR crappy viewpoint, and I can only say you don’t deserve to even listen or comment on it!

@elainemeyer5062

@Ken Davies I wrote a comment about yours about 1 1/2 weeks ago, but I want to add one more. It doesn’t matter what religion you are - you could be an atheist or agnostic for that matter. The lyrics are beautiful, and just bc it’s called and makes reference to the ‘Holy Mother’, shouldn’t cause you to be biased - their meaning has such depth. What kind of person are you and the others who share your thoughts about this song’s words make you feel like you do? Have you no belief in anything?! If that’s the case, I don’t feel sorry for you - instead I pity you for being so shallow.

I don't know if you could see it, but Mr. Pavarotti was grinning like a schoolboy when the 3 of you (EC, him, and your choir) were singing together towards the end. Well done. 👏 👏 👏
