Death
Hope and Social and Invisible Flock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world
And ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl
Love 'n' hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands
The hands that slap his kids around 'cause they don't understand

How death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory is just another story
'N' every gimmick hungry snob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But I believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who fucks nun will later join the church

Death or glory is just another story
Death or glory becomes another story

We're gonna march a long way, we're gonna fight a long time
We're gonna travel over mountains, we're gonna travel over seas
We're gonna fight you brother, we're gonna fight until you lose
We're gonna raise a lot trouble, we're gonna raise a lot of hell

From every dingy basement on every dingy street
Every dragging handclap or every dragging beat
That used to be the time-it's just the beat that must go on
And if you tried for years- we already heard your song

Death or glory is just another story
Death or glory becomes another story

Death or glory becomes another story
Death or glory becomes is another story

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song, Death by Hope and Social and Invisible Flock, explore the themes of love, hate, sacrifice, greed, and rebellion. The opening lines of the song introduce the idea that those living in poverty frequently make bad deals that end up trapping them in a vicious cycle of paying off debts for goods they can barely afford. The reference to a "sofa or a girl" suggests that people are willing to accept suffering in return for temporary relief, even if that relief ultimately leads to a worse situation.

The verses that follow address other aspects of the human experience, including the issues of love and hate, sacrifice, and rebellion. The lines, "Love 'n' hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands/The hands that slap his kids around 'cause they don't understand," are a powerful indictment of the cycle of abuse and self-destruction that many people find themselves in. The image of knuckle tattoos works as a metaphor for the inescapable conflicts and struggles of life.

The chorus of the song, "Death or glory becomes another story," is a succinct summary of the message of the song. It suggests that the aspiration for greatness, whether for oneself or for a larger cause, is all just another story. The final verse of the song, which speaks of marching, fighting, and raising hell, suggest the possibility of transcendence through collective action, but it also acknowledges the passing of time and the inevitability of change.

The Ring series by Koji Suzuki. Far from perfect books but I enjoyed the series more than I ever expected to.

Ring (1991)
Spiral (1995)
Loop (1998)
Birthday (1999)

Nothing like the movies. Somewhat dated in a lot of ways but it's such an engaging trilogy that blends Sci Fi and horror in a way I've never seen, with each entry getting more insane and technological than the last. The inclusion of the 4th book was also really cool in it's structure. Instead of telling a bunch of random stories in the film's universe, suzuki used the short story to tell a prequel story to Ring, a midquel story to spiral, and a sequel to Loop

I can say almost for certain that the series is batshit crazy and almost completely unadaptable. I still haven't read book 5 "S" and book 6 "Tide" is yet to be translated to English but I hope it is someday.

I read "The Hobbit" for the first time when I was eight years old. I was totally hooked! My mother spent one summer hunting through yardsales and used book stores, and found all the trilogy, plus several other things, ( including a book of early sheet music!) And she wrapped them all and gave them to me for my tenth birthday! It was so wonderful!
