Oh the mother and child reunion is only a motion away, yeah yeah yeah
No I would not give you false hopes
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
Oh, little darling of mine
I can't for the life of me
I know they say let it be
But it just don't work out that way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again
No I would not give you false hopes (no)
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
No I would not give you false hopes
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reunion is only a motion away, yeah
Mmm mmm mmm
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-ooh
Oh little darling of mine
I just can't believe it's so
And it seems so strange to say
But I've never been laid so low In such a mysterious way
And the course of a lifetime runs
Over and over again
No I would not give you false hopes (no)
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
Oh the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
Oh the mother and child reunion is only a moment away, yeah yeah yeah
Oh the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
Oh the mother and child reunion is only a moment away, yeah yeah yeah
Oh the mother and child reunion is only a motion away
Yes the mother and child reunion is only a moment away
The song "Mother and Child Reunion" by Horace Andy describes the painful separation between a mother and child, and the yearning to be reunited. The lyrics acknowledge the sadness of the situation but also offer hope that the reunion is possible and just a motion away. The line "Oh little darling of mine, I can't for the life of me remember a sadder day" captures the depth of the singer's emotion and sets the tone for the song. The lyrics also suggest that the pain of separation is a recurring theme in the course of a lifetime.
The song's title and chorus reference the dish "Mother and Child Reunion," a Chinese recipe consisting of chicken and eggs. Paul Simon, who wrote the song, came across the name on the menu of a Chinese restaurant and was struck by the juxtaposition of life and death in the name. He felt it was fitting for the theme of the song - the separation of a mother and child.
