Beauty And The Beast
Howard Ashman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly

Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the beast

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
cnd ever just as sure
cs the sun will rise

Oh oh oh oh

Whoa whoa oh oh
Ever just the same yeah
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
cs the sun will rise
Oh oh oh

Tale as old as time ooh ooh ooh
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Howard Ashman's song "Beauty and the Beast" tell the timeless story of two individuals who find themselves unexpectedly drawn together, despite their initial differences. The song highlights the transformative power of love and the beauty that can be found in looking beyond appearances.

The first verse introduces us to the familiar tale, emphasizing its age and enduring nature. It suggests that the story of love between a beauty and a beast is as true and unchanging as it can be. The lyrics also suggest that the characters were initially not close or intimate – they were "barely even friends." However, the line "then somebody bends unexpectedly" implies that a change occurs, and someone unexpectedly opens themselves up to the other.

The second verse suggests that this change is not drastic but still significant. It expresses that it is just a small alteration, perhaps a small act of vulnerability or understanding, but it causes both parties to feel a certain level of fear and not be fully prepared for what lies ahead. The lyrics highlight the duality of their emotions and the fear they harbor individually.

The chorus emphasizes the fact that love can be both predictable and surprising at the same time. It states that a love like this can be "ever just the same" and "ever a surprise." It solidifies the idea that this love story follows a pattern – just like the rising of the sun – but still manages to be unexpected in its own way.

The bridge of the song emphasizes the profound transformation and growth that love can bring. It suggests that discovering the ability to change and admitting one's faults allows for personal development and growth within the relationship. It also touches on the notion of acknowledging that one was wrong and learning from it.

The repetition of the last lines of the chorus at the end reinforces the idea that this tale is as old as time, and the love between beauty and the beast is as old as the song itself, highlighting the universality of the story and its timeless nature.

It's amazing how Ashman pulled this off: It works perfectly even if it's sung by an enchanted teapot, and it's a love song that's sung by neither the loved nor the beloved. It is a spectator who sings about how she's seen this before, how the lovers are part of something larger than both of them. It takes genius to portray love so vividly and strongly without even using the word "love" itself.

I remember watching an interview with Angela Lansbusy & she said that as soon as she heard the demo for Beauty & the Beast she thought it was so wonderful that she felt bad about replacing Howard's singing voice with her own voice when she heard it.
