Sunday Driver
Hudson Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunday driver with his hands off the wheel
He's not alone and they are copping a feel
The lady next to him is down on the floor
Sunday driver don't drive anymore

Sunday drive with his foot through the floor
The lady next to him is asking for more
Her legs across the seat
Her feet out the door
Sunday driver don't drive anymore

Sunday driver
Sunday driver
Sunday driver
Driver

Sunday driver moving faster than hell
The lady knows he's playing some kind of swell
See ya later I wish it so well
Sunday driver don't drive anymore

Come on honey
Let's go for a ride

Ya know what I want honey
See ya in the back seat

Hey
Sunday driver
Sunday driver

Beep Beep Beep
Beep Beep Sunday driver
Beep honk toot beep honk
Sunday driver
Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep

Sunday driver
Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep

Overall Meaning

The Hudson Brothers' song "Sunday Driver" is a fun, upbeat tune with a cheeky and somewhat suggestive theme. The song describes a guy who is out driving with a female companion, who we can assume is his date or girlfriend. Initially, they seem to be taking a leisurely Sunday drive, but as the song progresses, we realize that the driver is perhaps more focused on other things than the road. The lyrics suggest that he's got his hands off the wheel and that the lady beside him is "down on the floor." The song then takes a slightly racier turn as the couple's exploration of each other becomes more intense. The lady in question begins to ask for more, and we learn that she has her legs across the seat and her feet out the door. As the song builds, we get the sense that the couple is moving faster than is probably safe, with the lady "knowing he's playing some kind of swell." Finally, the song ends with the couple speeding off into the sunset - or, more likely, into oblivion, as the repeated "beep beep Sunday driver" refrain implies that there's something not quite right about this joyride.

While the lyrics of the song might be seen as a little risque, they're delivered with such a light touch that it's hard to take them too seriously. The Hudson Brothers' breezy harmonies and the catchy, upbeat melody make it easy to forget that we're listening to a song about teenage sex in a moving vehicle. The song is one of those sing-along classics that you might hear at a school dance or a retro-themed party. For many people, "Sunday Driver" conjures up images of a simpler time, before the dangers of distracted driving became apparent. In the context of the song, the idea of driving without your hands on the wheel and your attention elsewhere is played for laughs, but in real life, it's a serious problem that can lead to accidents and even tragedy.

Of all the records that ever should be "remastered/re-released", it's this one. Long before their Saturday morning TV show, and before they replaced "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" with a variety show of their own, the Hudson Brothers had a real band-and they were so brilliantly Beatle-y, it's just criminal that this never got airplay. IIRC, it was originally released on Rocket Records, which was Elton John's label. Maybe now that Mark Hudson has gotten the Harry Nilsson tribute off his producers plate, it can see the light of day--if anybody does it, it should be him, I hope it happens #bucketlist

As labelmates with KISS, I was hoping this would've been a version of Gene Simmons' "Sunday Driver" which was subsequently merged with Paul Stanley's "Drive Me Wild" to become "Rock and Roll All Night".

Taxman, Mean Mr Mustard, You Can't Do That, Girl, Maxwell Silver Hammer, Helter Skelter, Why Don't We Do It In The Road? They're all here and I love it.

Duude!! --- this song was the B-side of 'Be A Man', and I've always said that the chorus of 'Be A Man' is a total rip off of Helter Skelter! Gmta! 8-D

Heath Harrison

@Gregory Zahn a rip off or a respectful nod? Haha.

Gregory Zahn

@Heath Harrison Ah, Bill, Mark and Brett bowed deeply, swept their hats off, and 'ah, sir Paul, we nod and bow respectfully to Ye' .... ;-)
