Plan B
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wasn't forever the word you used?
Always together, you said we can't lose
Picture of a minister, bells and lace
And all of the relatives in one place
And then right in the middle of the party
You want to change your mind
Well it's time for me to wake up to reality
Plan be

I should have known better, a girl so fine
They tell me it happens all the time
Nothing but trouble tip to toe
And tons of attention everywhere you go
Well, you're the kind of girl that
Makes a little dog break a big chain
There's only one option that's left for me
Plan be

I guess it was too good to be true
All that devotion and attitude
But you found somebody you had missed
And that was the one thing that you can't resist
So you tell me that you love me
Then you kick me out in the street

Well, its time for me to face up to reality
Plan be

Overall Meaning

In Huey Lewis & The News's song "Plan B," the singer laments a failed relationship that was supposed to be forever. The song begins with the singer recalling what they believed was the initial agreement when they started their relationship, that they were always going to be together, and they would get married. The singer mentions the visual representation of their imagined wedding ceremony; a minister, bells, and relatives all together. However, the singer is shocked when their partner abruptly changes their minds during their party, indicating that they no longer wish to take their relationship to the next level. The singer then becomes realistic and decides it's time to move on, accepting that there is always a "Plan B" when things don't work out.

In the next verse, the singer's frustration towards their partner is evident, stating that they should have known better than to get involved with someone who is always in trouble and loves attention. The partner is described as a person who has a magnetic quality that attracts everyone's attention. The relationship has come to a point where there is only one option left, a backup plan or "Plan B." The singer believes that their partner was too good to be true, and after finding someone else, kicks the singer out onto the street.

BB king on the start?..what a nice and relaxed album, great surprise from a band that saw their hight point in the 80´s...much better from other 80´s bands that should have retired long ago..congrats..
