Gypsy Woman
Hyland Brian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From nowhere through a caravan
Around the campfire light
A lovely woman in motion
With hair as dark as night
Her eyes were like that of a cat in the dark
That hypnotized me with love

She was a gypsy woman,
She was a gypsy woman

She danced around and round to a guitar melody
From the fire her face was all aglow
How she enchanted me
Oh, how I'd like to hold her near
And kiss and forever whisper in her ear

I love you, gypsy woman
I love you, gypsy woman

All through the caravan
She was dancing with all the men
Waiting for the rising sun
Everyone was having fun
I hate to see the lady go
Knowing she'll never know
That I love her, I love her

She was a gypsy woman
A gypsy woman, a gypsy woman, a gypsy woman

Overall Meaning

The song "Gypsy Woman" is an ode to a mysterious and enchanting woman who enters the singer's life unexpectedly. As she dances around the campfire with the other men, the singer becomes mesmerized by her dark hair and cat-like eyes. He longs to hold her close and express his love for her. However, he knows that his love for this gypsy woman is likely unrequited, as she is merely passing through his life and will never know the depth of his feelings for her.

Within the lyrics lies a significant appreciation for freedom and adventure whether the singer can match a gypsy, land-based persona or not. It can be suggestive towards a more exotic and less mundane lifestyle when things get too overwhelming. The fact that the gypsy woman is moving from place to place echoes the transient quality of life that is so often found in certain periods of time. The singer yearns after the woman but the reality is that their relationship is fleeting and impermanent. It’s intriguing to hear the singer describe the way she moves, with her hair flowing in the wind and her eyes mesmerizing and entrancing him.

The music of the 60's & 70's is and will always be very special to me as a teen in the 60's. I appreciate it more today, and prefer it to most of what is out there today.

You take the words right out of my mouth
The 60s was a decade of diversified music that crossed all barriers. The beach/surf sound, the British invasion, and my personal favorite, coming from Michigan was the Motown sound.
I am sad that most people will never appreciate the era we hold so dear, and nothing today can hold a candle to the innocent and pure times we lived in
