I'm curious who these glowing reports of Land Warrior were actually coming from.

I was in 4/9 during 1-2 years of testing it stateside and working out the kinks (even back when it had the gun-cam), and our 15 months in combat; the REMFs loved nerding out over it, but I can't think of a single day to day squad leader who didn't hate it with a passion.

Off the top of my head, I can remember a dude being stuck up in the hatch while under fire and just losing his mind that "I'm going to die because of all this crap on me", overheating batteries, and the heads up GPS showing our location as in the middle of the pacific ocean.

Our leaders carried it every day but virtually never chose to use it for its intended purposes (namely because it rarely worked even if they did), which really means it was like 20+ lbs of just dead weight.

It is obviously a cool concept and no doubt the future of war, but the same officers that for better or worse endorsed anything "modular", did the same thing for anything that made you look like Robocop well before it was combat ready.

As a retired Army Division Bandsman it is good to see the TRADOC Band acknowledged at 1:22 as a leader in Future Soldier development even though they are issued no TA50, never go to the field and rarely qualify their individual weapons, unlike division bands.

I think that there is another level of benefit to systems like these. They are allowing the military to utilize skills trained almost from birth into just about every young person... video games.

You get to have soldiers used to ammo counters, GPS waypoints and directions, marked objectives, a hud that marks friendly positions and stops friendly fire from being as much of an issue.

My hunch is that they would be locked down from an electronics stand point. Auto lock outs of the devices, 256 bit+ encryption, Multifactor authentication, remote data wipe + a ton more. All the things the military already would do for laptops, cell phones, and anything else.

Being an Aussie Vet the first time I heard of Land Warrior integrated system mentioned in short articles in the 90s and pictures of futuristic soldiers standing up with all the gear on and the first thing i thought was "Looks heavy" and "Where are we gonna get all the batteries to run this?". The other time I read anything about it was in Max Brooks World War Z "Battle of Yonkers". His depiction, although fictitious, painted a picture of soldiers receiving too much information at once. This was something we had a slight struggle with when section level coms were integrated and much like Police, there had to be a "Clear line" discipline worked out. I would have to say I was not a big fan of anyone relying on too many "Gizmos". GPS is O.K unless you were in a Jungle or lost sat and in Australia where the whole country moves 2cm north each year, it does play havoc with integrated satellite global positioning. Maintaining basic field craft skills is essential and necessary. The more tech means more complications to consider. EDIT: We move 7cm a year! I can hear my highschool geography teacher slapping his forehead 🤦

As an Infantryman I can't wait to get my hands on this. The ability to tell my guys exactly where I want them or exactly where im looking would be an amazing tool for a Team and Squad leader.

I think the biggest flaw with these manufacturers need to realize though. Is how dumb the average grunt is. For these to succeed they need tobe damn near bullet proof, and as easy to use as an Xbox controller. Because the engineers making this stuff always underestimate the how stupid the average person really is. (That sounds awful but it really is the truth. Anyone who's spent time on a average line unit will agree with me)

Yes I know it looks bulky. But look up old NVGs and compare them to today. Even in the video you can see the 1st gen versions of these heads up displays compared to the current prototype. This really is the future for the Infantry. (In this average Infantrymens opinion)

I always wondered how can one make such systems for convenient coordination safe enough for the friendly forces once the enemy captures some of the systems. For example, a battalion commander would have access to real time positions of units that belong to the brigade his battalion is part of, in order to avoid friendly fire and know where the neighbouring battalions are. Enemy forces come up with a plan and unexpectedly advance rapidly through the positions of this battalion. Before adequate actions are taken, enemy forces manage to reach the command post and capture the device of the battalion commander. They don't even need to take him alive at this point, because his device has now showed them all units of this brigade in the area. The enemy now has exact coordinates to conduct strikes on the entire brigade.
If one uses primitive methods (maps, pencils, radio and binoculars), information will always be delayed and not precise, but if the enemy kills the command staff, they would have to resort to reading the captured maps and documents that will most certainly change in a matter of hours to a day.
If you put passwords on the devices that pop up every 30 minutes, for example, this makes your device inconvenient to use, because it can happen in a heated moment where you must make a decision fast and then your screen will lock.

Not only is the infrastructure not in combat zones, civilian phones don’t go through hours of torture testing. Extreme heat and cold. Dunked under water and buried in mud. Put through vibration machines. The newest phones might survive; probably would survive in the right cases. But might and probably don’t cut it when soldiers’ lives are at stake. Test and development is slow for a good reason. The cost is debatable.

That's why I miss Casio phones. Fuckers made Nokias look fragile. Mine survived being dropped off a roof onto concrete, was run over by a riding lawnmower, fell into water multiple times, spent a night partially submerged in water, got hucked into a brick wall when I got pissed, was xhewed on by a rottweiler, and last for years. I only quit using it because the charger broke. I was only going to get a smartphone once that phone died and it lasted for years longer than I expected it to.

Cappy, I want to believe you that our system results in better solutions in part because of the factors you discuss. But it is difficult to imagine that the inefficiency cost is worth the extremely long lead times and technological dead ends. It feels (and I use that word advisedly) as if we could do with 10% less effective systems because it would save far more than 10% cost. Now I can already hear people objecting "We can't accept ten percent less! We must have the best possible solution for our warfighters. Would you go into battle with a 10% less effective system???" To that I would answer that we can have an even more effective system if we spend double the money. Quadruple the money. ALL the money! But we don't. Because at some point the additional investment does not yield enough additional effectiveness to be worth spending our resources there instead of elsewhere.

I want to believe our system is worth it. As a civilian who has done a bit of defense contract work, I don't know how much of that desire to believe is well informed and how much is just my hope.

I wonder how hard it would be to counter such a system when it seems heavily dependant on wireless communication systems? It doesn't seem like a good idea to adapt your military to a new tech that can potentially be disabled cheaply with low tech solutions by the opposing forces.

IIRC the French FELIN programme was the same thing in the 90's, it also reached the conclusion that the tech wasn't ready yet but apparently one good thing coming out of it was the skull transmition radio which reportdedly was a quantum leap in term of audio quality and ease of use and actually got adopted for service.

As a compromise that would cut the equipment cost and the mental load on the average grunt, how about only issuing the high end mapping stuff to officers and NCOs? For the average grunt I imagine a simplified version that would enable them to see and shoot around corners or from behind cover would be enough of a game changer. Just make sure the system has scalability built in so extra abilities could be cascaded down the line as needed.

But he actually tested the Land warrior project. He was telling me about it one night when we were having some drinks. We brought up the video from Future weapons and he pointed out which guy he was. Until the whole visual system can be integrated into the headset it's not worth it, max size can be an Ironman helmet that's shrapnel resistant. The phone unit shows promise though, self-contained, easy stow and access. It's perfect for in-between immediate fighting for planning and stuff but it may take your hands and attention away from what's in front of you for too long for comfort in the heat of battle. We might really call in UAVs and see the enemy pings in our HUD in WW3, but only if we get enough kills to be a priority. Hopefully no one hits 25

Actually, all those tech things could give superiority in combat. For example, ukrainian soldiers use the system called "Krapiva", which allows drone operators to transmit accurate real-time coordinates to other units, such as artillery units which allows you to gain an advantage over a large enemy due to the need to fire 1-2 sighting shots instead of the usual 5-10. Even conventional mounted grenade launchers like Mk 47 can be fired over a kilometer, with an accuracy of 1-3 meters with real-time corrections. This is really Joker card.

The friendly fire mitigation idea seems like a brilliant idea, even if it's just relayed back to arty so as not to clog up the screen of troops in contact. The worry is that an enemy could take out a soldier, stick on his helmet and instantly gain intel on the position of all friendlies on the field, which he could potentially send up the line.

Getting 'TMI' on the HUD could be mitigated by merging with soldier biometrics: reading pulse etc. to dial down the amount of info displayed (on a standardised least-to-most-pertinent basis) when in high stress situations. Having biometric readings displaying in real time back to base could also show when someone is downed (linked with GPS locations), and could not only help with rapid medical response, but allow higher-ups to allocate more troops to areas suffering more casualties. I know I'm sounding a bit Metal Gear Solid with this, but *no hypothetical nanomachines involved*, strap on heart rate and blood pressure monitors are miniscule these days, and pupil dilation can be measured with a cam in the HUD contraption no problem.

If I may present a suggestion, the 'black screen scrolling the script' is unpleasant. You have plenty of B roll, just play that, or even better; give contextual sources to what you're saying, because you're usually working off legitimate sources anyway. Give me the wall of text that I can pause on if I want to know more or glaze over if I'm lazy (I'm one of those guys that pause on single frames every time. Sorry).

This is very cool indeed. I've never heard of it before, but it's very similar to how we try to invent the metaverse, like, yea, that's my job. AR is the only game in town at that level, augmenting your reality with sensorics, filters, information, and so on.

Technology isn't there yet, but we're getting there fast. Imagine how easy IKEA would be, for instance, if you downloaded the instructions as a filter on your AR glasses, and singled out for you which pieces should go where, as you unpacked and assembled the stuff.

Look, I think we all need to acknowledge that "Mars 3.0" is a much cooler name than the US future combat project system names. "Land Warrior" is kinda cool sounding in a certain understated way (previous generation people were obviously also literally 'land warriors.') China has a real cyberpunk cool project names gap with the US. In order to keep up, we need to invest any expense in cool spacey futuristic cyberpunk project names.

A real time data network for the average grunt seems like a good idea. But a captured soldier can suddenly give a massive intel dump to the enemy. Likewise a dead soldier can give the same intel to the enemy by having his data gear and link still being active and laying around. It seems like a good idea, and I think in an ideal combat situation it would give all kinds of benefits, but it seems like there're risks involved. If you were fighting some African military, or the North Koreans or the PRC's PLA, how would they benefit from getting their hands on a fallen soldier's data-kit? Still, it would probably prevent or scale back friendly fire incidents, but how much of a firepower boost or tactical advantage would get over a more primitive enemy like the Taliban? Or say Somali warlords or the Vietcong back in the 1960s? In short, I wonder if some of this isn't overkill. But that's just my uninformed opinion.

@LRRPFco52 I think the problem is that it would still be in use today and would have been obsolete by the time it was fielded. I do think the display was a better idea than an integrated goggle. That's going to be a big hold up. It sounds great on paper but the issues with headaches, nausea , and balance will persist because it's a human issue . It wouldn't surprise me to see TBI like symptoms start springing up if it's adopted.

We did 3 JRTC deployments back-to-back from the summer to winter of 2000 testing Land Warrior in the Box. The latter 2 were very short deployments, not the full 28 days.

Navigation, accountability, threat detection, and joint fires were game-changing with Land Warrior. It looked nothing like the original proof of concept Land Warrior from 1995. That system looked like R2D2’s intestines exploded out of a rucksack.

Back in the 70s (I think) the Army had Artillery computers...they were large and heavy and did not work more than half the time. A NG Artillery unit (Texas I think) went to annual training and shot the pants off of the active duty units. One of their officers worked for Texas Instruments and he had programed some of their hand held computers to do artillery plotting. It could not do everything that the big computer could (ie extreme long range) but it could do about 95% of what it could and in WAY less time and they had one for every gun so they could in fact fire every gun in a battery onto a different target accurately. The NG troops paid for them themselves. I think it took the Army about another 10 years or more to figure this out.

Drone Racing as a sport created a need in the market that was filled by a company called Vuzix Corporation with their smart glasses that superimpose the DJI drone cam on the glasses lens, and they even look better than the Army's BCG's lol. It's called the Vuzix Blade and they have a couple videos on here demonstrating it being used with DJI's. Their main market is civil engineers. The cool part is, you can look through them just like regular sunglasses, but you can see the drone cam footage at the same time. They're only slightly heavier than a pair of regular glasses. This is next level Alien v Predator tech.

The US needs to implement Kali linux with someone who understands it so that you can hack an take control over wireless devices while on the move.

Its easy to install to a smart phone an even easier to spoof an gain access to networks then people think.

The lack of having a person within a unit that is well capable of using the software within kali is only an Achilles heel to future warfare an it must become a priority to make sure at least every unit has a white/ black hat within there squad if they truly want to maintain thw upoer hand.

As much as I want to see these deployed. It always seems that the US has a tendency to try to deploy tech and systems ahead of its time. I have a feeling that some, if not all of these systems wil either be downscaled or cancelled and we won't see systems like these in some time for a number of years before they are finally mature enough to be properly fielded.

I think this time is fully do-able. We have incredible AR headsets right now. Microsoft actually sells hololense devices to the public. Much of what the device does is piggybacking off of the droid device, but this ads visual integration right into their field of view. Links to the new smart scope, sharing what you see with the squad. Enhancements to night vision systems. This is a big game changer and as someone who has used some of the publicly available VR and AR systems I can tell you, its fucking ready.

I work for the Air Force Research Laboratory. This certainly rings a bell. I'd say that the truly wiz-bang stuff always takes 15-20 years because that's how long it takes for technology to catch up to the idea and for CONOPS and TTPs and user acceptance to develop around it. And it's always a give and take with warfighter experience with prototypes helping to drive the next increment until everyone is happy including the money people. In some cases you can go faster, but the acquisition system and politics slows you down. BTW, you forgot to mention the JTRS mess:-)

Payload delivery should be triggered from remote of the drone itself,not separate one. It is crucial in combat circumstances. Proven in Ukraine. And it is dead easy to implement - payload is triggered by aux light on the drone. Just a simple photoresistor substitutes an additional remote, battery, etc

Things to consider:
1) what happens if the enemy gets a hold of your hardware? Note how the Russians were easily able to give samples of Javelins and NLAWs to Iran for reverse engineering. For this, they can use the captured samples to get troop positions or feed false information.
2) Can the enemy jam your signals, or use your signals to get your position?
3) Regarding China building their own system: if they steal it, they save a ton of time and money. They're pretty adept at doing just that, and they have the manufacturing to produce it.

Anything on the battlefield, if you don't want to be captured by the enemy.. that is almost impossible, unless you have an overwhelming advantage, like you said Javelins and NLAW. The Russians captured a lot, but they can hardly Imitate them in large quantities, maybe you can make one or two pieces for reference, but mass production is almost impossible, because these anti-tank missiles are not likely to be produced in a single way even by the United States. They come from the system chain of NATO countries, and the United States provides them. Chips, the United Kingdom provides the seeker, Sweden provides the launch tube technology, and Japan produces the key materials for the bullet core. These are typical products of global weapons. Let alone Iran, even Russia cannot produce them at all, so the war will start in February So far, the Russian army has seized many advanced NATO standard weapons, but you can't see them on the battlefield until now.

I think you missed the whole point of the bottle drop feature. In combat you really have to be thirsty and 30 minutes away to have it carry a delicious cold drink to your buddies. I mean with that payload capacity?
OR, it could carry grenades, bombs, anyth8ing lethal and explosive that will go off ones its dropped. Fly it over to deliver a friendly bit of death and destruction from above to the enemy.
But your right in that is not what they would sell it for.... I mean that is not what the tech is sold to the Ukrainians for. I think they use it for the second option, and then Americans can use it for ferrying cold beer to their buddies while out fishing :)

I've always thought that land warrior systems would be issued at the leadership level, to enhance leadership decision making much like how night vision goggles were generally issued at the leadership level for the longest time. Until some miracle technology that micro miniaturizes everything down to a much lighter smaller footprint. Additionally just dealing with the information sometimes as a generational thing, My 80-year-old father could not deal with the information load from a heads up display, but my friends 10-year-old son who grew up with that information load could parse it far far better than I can now, and I'm 40.

Plus he was ex-military, therefore he has a basic understanding on how these works. Of course he isn't a four-star general with a lot of officer experience, but you shouldnt just shrug at the information he us providing. I also understand your perspective completely. Give these modern troops the same equipment as they did during the Vietnam war, and they would've been not as tough and/or not have relied on technology as much. I do understand that our military relies on advanced technology to "defeat" our foes, but let's say somehow our technology stopped working, our branches would struggle a lot due to us being dependent on technology.

Such combat simulators already exist for basic marksmanship. The reservists I was with after my contract started their career like that.

It means you can squeeze the trigger and get an idea of ballistics without firing actual ammo, you can spend a lot more time there for the same money compared to using an actual firing range and ammunition and instructors have an easier time in a warm nice computer center compared to some sandpit in the cold and in the rain on the moors.
Now you could argue the latter is irrelevant since a military needs to be tough, but the reality is a lot of armies have a problem with personel retention. Nothing is gained by making instructors miserable.

They all passed the eventual marksmanship test the first time, so I guess it works.

"America's defense procurement system is great!" ... sure, if you want 20-year-old tech, delivered at 20-years-from-now-prices. Seriously, I find this kind of thing absurd; pretty much everything Land Warrior could do is being done, in the field, by Ukrainians, using off-the-shelf smartphones.

Need your location? Smartphone (you don't need cell towers for GPS and today's phones have enough memory for absurd-level detailed maps). Satellite coms with end-to-end encryption? Smartphone and Starlink. That also covers, "share map with command so we don't black-cross u", etc. Need to pass your arty battery your latest drone footage? Smartphone. If somebody ever gets around to simply mounting a smartphone's accelerometers and a compatible camera with optics, now you can aim at a target around a corner, just sticking your weapon around the corner... with, you guessed it, a smartphone.

No, they won't all pass the "mud test", but they're force multipliers and they're cheap and the tech gets 10-25% better per pound per year. It's absolutely bonkers to buy this kind of thing the way you'd buy a new rifle; just build it on an open platform and keep upgrading and debugging ad finitum. Whereas, what we're actually doing is using 10-year-old smartphones that weren't phenomenal even then (because the military didn't want to use Apple and Android was still pretty rough).

I literally can't understand why it's 2022 and we buy fighters that aren't inherently designed with enough space, electrical power and cooling potential to accept new computational hardware every 5 years, because it'll be necessary to stay on the razor's edge... and Land Warrior is a classic joke about a solution in search of a problem, when we're literally watching a war conducted by people with smartphones leveraging mainly off-the-shelf or pretty old tech (like, the MRLS that's making a huge difference? the version they're using is almost 30 years old; what makes it so scary to the Russians is the cheap drones and smartphones providing it with accurate, up-to-date recce).

Really fascinating episode, reminds me of Harlan Ellison's "Soldier from Tomorrow", published in Fantastic Universe, OCT57 who broached the subject. Later made into an Outer Limits episode. BTW; lived off of RT 30, but in Framingham, about 2 miles from the Lab. The Town of Natick is pronounced with an emphasis on the first syllable NA, long A, and the T in Tick isn't pronounced with an emphasis, at least by the Locals. Its a Tribal name.

I have served a tour with Army (detatched to DOD doing R&D ). I then spent 15 years of my working career at major defense firms. It was my experience that if a program returned even 1cent of value for every 1dollar spent it was exceptionally well above the average. Most programs were complete wastes of money and were only sponsored because some officer needed the project management experience to make his or her next rank. Either that or someone in the pentagon owed someone in defense industry a favor.

I always thought an FPS video game style HUD is honestly the future of warfare. Hell, if you could project a crosshair and even holographic sights onto a gun, you’d remove the need to have physically mounted optics.

I doubt Augmented Reality technology will get there within the next few decades, though, sadly.

@n Something many people forget, that n here is getting at is that the primary weapon of the grunt isnt even his rifle anymore. Its his radio. If you find band guys, you call a strike from something that WILL fuck them up. Your rifle is basically just to keep them pinned and away until the big thing is ready.

@Guinness that's kind of the idea. You use boots on the ground to cover a wide area and have a high caliber weapon system ready to find targets and return fire when things gets ugly.

That's not at all that much different to how special forces operate these days, as far as I am aware. The only change really is that these systems wouldn't necessarily need to be manned. Grunts decide when to engage and the automated system picks up from there.

Personally, I would pair one of these automated fire support systems with an 30mm cannon and mount it on top of any vehicle that can take it, with a manual mode for backup just in case. Those air burst 30mm rounds are no joke.

A virtual crosshair is something we could easily have in the next couple of years, if we don't have it already.

The main issue is that it would have to be tridimensional to be useful at anything but short ranges, or ideally paired with a range finder, but that’s doable.

Optics are so much better than irons that if you do not have them, you may as well go home. The point I'm making is that we are close to an infantry revolution on par with what happened when radar came to fighter jets.

The information of where you are can be relayed . If we can give them all it go for it but it's probably going to be how I described & for special forces. The star link system is going to probably be involved in whatever the final result is . If you can hook the phones up to that directly, it should work very well now. IVAS’s human interface is too cumbersome, wherefore, “they” will likely skip the physicalities of external visual and auditory interfaces and opt for the hard wired variety (Neural Link). That might sound cool, but it won’t be, because the same link that provides soldiers (humans) direct interface with “the Cloud” (i.e. AI), provides “the Cloud” direct access to the soldiers/humans and our realm/reality. It would be wise of us to keep such matters a mystery.
