In The Year 2525
Ian Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the year 2525 if man is still alive
If woman can survive they may find

In the year 3535 ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do or say is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545 ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to do, nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555 your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs not nothing to do, some machine is doing that for you
In the year 6565 ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too from the bottom of a long black tube
In the year 7510 if God's a-coming he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say, guess it's time for the Judgement day
In the year 8510 God's gonna shake his mighty head
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been or tear it down and start again
In the year 9595 I'm kinda wondering if man's gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give and he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been 10,000 years, man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew, now man's reign is through

But through the eternal night the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Ian Brown's "In The Year 2525" presents listeners with the possibility of a future where humanity is still alive, but only if women are able to survive as well. The second verse jumps 500 years ahead into the year 3535 where honesty and lies are obsolete because of a pill that controls what people think, do, and say. The third verse, set in the year 4545, poses a world where teeth and eyes are rendered useless and people become obsolete themselves. The fourth verse, in the year 5555, imagines a world where machines have replaced the use of their limbs, leaving them with nothing to do. The fifth verse, set in the year 6565, suggests the replacement of the traditional family structure, where children are handpicked out of tubes. The sixth verse, in the year 7510, imagines if God is coming or not, and if he should, it might be time for the judgement day. The seventh verse jumps ahead 1000 years into year 8510, where God will assess where humanity has been, and either be pleased with it or start again. Finally, the eighth verse presents listeners with the question of whether or not humans will even be alive in the year 9595, where everything has been taken from the earth, and nothing has been given back.

Overall, "In The Year 2525" presents a dystopian future where humanity has lost control of themselves and their own destiny, leaving them with nothing to do and no one to connect with. The song highlights the idea that humanity could be moving towards a future where they have no control over technology and other emerging factors, such as scientific discovery and socio-political climates.

I have never been the biggest Stone Roses or Ian Brown fan but this track, and new album, may just have converted me. Astonishing and outstanding. I was in a shop when I first heard this and was rooted to the spot. Massive chills up my back and tears in my eyes. Mental really but that is what music is all about sometimes. Big up Brother Monkey!

What a legendary cover of the Song and a legend himself

Longi1974

Inspired cover, perfect for Ian's voice and style, only he could get away with this. And those lyrics, as relevant as ever.

This is the best of all covers. Mr Brown could record the Lord's prayer & make it sound boss! See you in 2525 when this is a national anthem!...are we gonna make it? Crazy times, music will see us all right..
