Welcome Home
Ian Flanigan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they lay you in the cold, hard earth,
will you know what your time is worth?
Will you hear the angels call,
or find nothing, nothing at all.
Reincarnated like a bird on a wire,
to sing your song in a one man's choir.
You live your life like a rolling stone,
only happy when you feel alone,
only happy when you feel alone.

""I got a hole in me,""
said the Captain to the sea.
He said,""oh I envy the sky, for she is free.
She'll be the death of me, jealousy.
All my life I've been homesick for a place I don't recall.
I feel like I was born to fly, though I'm built to fall.
All my life I've been searching for a place I've never seen, but here I don't belong, or there—somewhere in between.""

Broke my body for a dollar bill,
there's a hole win the cup that I'm trying to fill.
A woman's touch can heal your pain, ease your mind, and kill you all the same.
All I want is what I've earned, all I have is what I've learned.
There's nobody that can hold my soul.
I'm only happy when I feel alone,
only happy when I feel alone.

One night on the ocean,
the sea was on the rise.
The waves began to whisper,
""Captain close your eyes,
Captain close your eyes, we're here to take you home.
We will welcome you as one of our own.
We are all lost souls, happiest alone.

We welcome you,
Welcome home.""

Overall Meaning

In Ian Flanigan's song "Welcome Home," the lyrics explore themes of mortality, longing for a sense of belonging, and the complexity of human emotions. The song begins with a reflection on the fleetingness of life and questions about what awaits after death. The image of being reincarnated like a bird on a wire emphasizes the desire to find purpose and meaning in life, even if it means singing in solitude. The lyrics suggest that the singer finds solace in being alone and perhaps feels more comfortable when disconnected from others.

The second verse delves into the feelings of longing and displacement. The Captain's words highlight a sense of envy towards the freedom of the sky and a longing for a place that cannot be remembered. The desire to fly juxtaposed with the realization of being bound to fall creates a sense of yearning and contradiction. The search for a place that has never been seen further accentuates the character's feeling of not belonging anywhere, trapped in between two worlds.

The song's final verse takes a more personal turn, addressing the singer's struggles and the yearning for fulfillment. The line about breaking one's body for a dollar bill suggests the sacrifices made in pursuit of material success. Despite these efforts, there is an acknowledgment that true contentment cannot be found solely in external achievements. The woman's touch is presented as both healing and destructive, highlighting the complexity of relationships. Ultimately, the singer declares their independence and finds happiness in solitude, suggesting a longing for personal freedom and individuality.

Overall, "Welcome Home" addresses themes of mortality, longing, isolation, and the search for purpose and belonging. It paints a poignant picture of human emotions and explores the deep yearning that exists within each of us.

I listened to this mans voice and lyrics, this dude here knows what music is all about, that quiet time outside with myself really hearing his songs in my ear, the journey it took my mind on was good for my soul....I took it to the laboratory and broke down every word and syllable... good stuff...great voices are hard to find....Robert Plant, Jeff Buckley, Stevie wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Steve perry, Stevie nicks, Whitney Houston, Chris daughtry, George Clinton, don henley etc.... add Ian Flanigan to that list.... for real for real🏈 Peace!!!!!

My sister and I played this song for our friend a year ago. Now I hear it alone because I lost her on December 5th. Your music helps me with my pain, and helps me not take my own life. Thank you

@IanFlanigan

It means a lot that the music means that much to you, and I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time and a huge loss. I have friends who have committed suicide and I take it very seriously. I know they would all rather be here with us today and no matter how hard it is, it’s always better to be alive and keep pushing than to check out. If you need support, please reach out, especially to those who can really help. Sending love.

@adamhollis4740

Outstanding, Man. Im floored every single time i hear you. Its so good, Its easy to forget that you still had to learn to sing even if gifted with a unique voice. Your voice is very moving in song. Without you putting your life into your music and crafting it, You'd be just another deep voice. It's you that makes that voice great. Without your heart. Without your trials, tribulations and triumphs...that voice would just be the best at karaoke night. I admire your dedication and what you've learned you can do. You've perfected your craft. Just heard you cover Mr. Dylan on the voice. That's one of my all time favorite artists along with Creedence, and i couldn't believe what you did with those songs. Regardless of what happens on the show, The world has been blessed to hear such a one of a kind voice honoring such one of a kind artists. Just an unbelievable job with some very classic, important songs. Looking forward to hearing your music being introduced as a result of the show, and wish you and your family well on this exciting moment in your career. Huge fan
