Gillan was born in Hounslow, Middlesex, England. He joined the band Deep Purple in 1969. In 1970, he sang the part of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. After leaving Deep Purple in 1973, he went into brief retirement before forming the Ian Gillan Band. The early band sound had a distinct jazz-rock aspect which proved unpopular and was replaced by a more high powered hard rock sound as Gillan reformed the lineup and shortened the groups name to Gillan. With the release of Mr. Universe Ian Gillan was back in the UK charts and through several more line up changes released a string of hit singles and successful albums including Glory Road, Future Shock, Double Trouble, and finally Magic.
Then he announced the band would fold as he needed to rest his damaged vocal cords. In 1983 he joined Black Sabbath to record the Born Again album before rejoining a reunited Deep Purple shortly after completing the Born Again tour in early 1984. He left Purple again in 1989, but rejoined for good in 1992. He remains in the band today.
Gillan is now working on a project to document his 40-year career, tentatively called Gillan's Inn. Tony Iommi, Jeff Healey, various members of Deep Purple and many others will be featured on this 2006 DVD project.
No Lotion For That
Ian Gillan Lyrics

With a bye-bye notion of love
She gave no warning
Did a handbrake into my life
It's all too much for me
She said what's up
We live, we die
You wanna stay in touch
She don't mean nothing to me
She set my spirit free
She's crawlin' up and down my back
And there ain't no lotion for that
We got no money
So what we gonna do tonight
I'm well passed caring
We'll be staring at the walls all night
It's all too much for a white boy
She said what's happenin'
I said what you got
She set me on fire, ha!
The woman is hot
She don't mean nothing to me
She set my body free
She's crawlin' up and down my back
And there ain't no lotion for that
When it's time to leave
She has to have another dance
It's fair to assume she got
Termites loose in her pants
It's all too much pour moi
She said what's up
I said not much
We live, we die
You wanna stay in touch
She don't mean nothing to me
She set my spirit free
She's crawlin' up and down my back
And there ain't no lotion for that
The song "No Lotion For That" by Ian Gillan depicts the story of a young man who encounters a girl with a carefree attitude towards love. From the very beginning, the singer describes the girl as a "rude girl baby" with a "bye-bye notion of love". Her sudden appearance in his life was unexpected as she crashed in like a car that suddenly handbrakes. The singer seems to be overwhelmed with the girl's wild lifestyle. Despite him saying that the girl does not mean anything to him, her compelling presence on his back implies that he is struck by her charm.
The lyrics "We got no money, So what we gonna do tonight? I'm well passed caring, We'll be staring at the walls all night" reflect the moment of realization and acceptance. It seems like the singer is willing to forget everything that he knows to enjoy his time with this girl. The phrase "She set me on fire, ha! The woman is hot" emphasizes how the girl plays a significant role in making his life exciting.
The chorus of the song repeats the lyrics "She don't mean nothing to me, She set my spirit free" and "She's crawlin' up and down my back, And there ain't no lotion for that". The girl's presence is simultaneously liberating and frustrating for the singer. The last verse, "When it's time to leave, She has to have another dance, It's fair to assume she got, Termites loose in her pants" implies that the girl is not interested in anything serious and only wants to have fun.
