The Last Supper
Ian Gillan Lyrics

APOSTLES

Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine.
Don't disturb me now, I can see the answers
'Till this evening is this morning, life is fine.
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle.
Knew that I would make it if I tried.
Then when we retire, we can write the Gospels,
So they'll still talk about us when we've died.

JESUS

The end...is just a little harder, when brought about by friends.
For all you care, this wine could be my blood.
For all you care, this bread could be my body.
The end! This is my blood you drink.
This is my body you eat.
If you would remember me when you eat and drink.
I must be mad thinking I'll be remembered.
Yes, I must be out of my head.
Look at your blank faces. My name will mean nothing
Ten minutes after I'm dead.
One of you denies me.
One of you betrays me.

APOSTLES

No! Who would?! Impossible!

JESUS

Peter will deny my in just a few hours.
Three times will deny me,
And that's not all I see.
One of you here dining,
One of my twelve chosen
Will leave to betray me.

JUDAS

Cut the dramatics!
You know very well who.

JESUS

Why don't you go do it?

JUDAS

You want me to do it!

JESUS

Hurry, they are waiting.

JUDAS

If you knew why I do it

JESUS

I don't care why you do it!

JUDAS

To think I admired you.
Well now I despise you.

JESUS

You liar. You Judas.

JUDAS

You want me to do it!
What if I just stayed here
And ruined your ambition.
Christ you deserve it.

JESUS

Hurry, you fool. Hurry and go.
Save me your speeches,
I don't want to know. Go!

APOSTLES

Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine.
What's that in the bread? It's gone to my head,
'Till this morning is this evening, life is fine.
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle.
Knew that I would make it if I tried.
Then when we retire, we can write the Gospels,
So they'll all talk about us when we've died.

JUDAS

You sad, pathetic man, see where you've brought us to,
Our ideals die around us and all because of you.
But the saddest cut of all:
Someone has to turn you in.
Like a common criminal, like a wounded animal.
A jaded mandarin,
A jaded mandarin,
Like a jaded, faded, faded, jaded, jaded mandarin.

JESUS

Get out they're waiting! Get out!
They're waiting, Oh, they are waiting for you!

JUDAS

Every time I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand.
You'd have managed better if you had it planned...
Oh....

APOSTLES

Always hoped that I'd be an apostle.
Knew that I would make it if I tried.
Then when we retire, we can write the Gospels,
So they'll still talk about us when we've died.

JESUS

Will no one stay awake with me?
Peter, John, James?

Will none of you wait with me?
Peter, John, James?

Overall Meaning

The Last Supper is a song by Ian Gillan that tells the story of the last supper and the events that preceded it. The lyrics are divided into three parts, the first part is the apostles expressing their hopes and dreams of becoming apostles and writing the gospels, the second part is Jesus talking about the events that are about to unfold, and the third part is Judas betraying Jesus. The song starts with the apostles sinking into wine and dreaming of becoming apostles. They hoped to become apostles and write the gospels so they will always be remembered after they have died. It seems they are content with their lot in life and are not disturbed by anything until they have to confront betrayals.

The second part is Jesus talking about the events that will take place, where he reveals that one of his apostles will betray him and one of them will deny him three times. The lyrics suggest that Jesus is resigned to his fate, but he is also angry with his disciples for not understanding the gravity of the situation. The final part of the song is Judas betraying Jesus. Judas seems defensive and desperate, and his speeches portray him as a tragic figure who is torn between his loyalty to Jesus and his desire to save himself.

The last part of the song never fails to break my heart. This is the turning point of the whole story, the final nail in the coffin. Judas has completely turned his back on Jesus, his right hand man, and the Apostles here just don't seem to understand the journey Jesus must go through in order to save humanity as they sing the same old verse over and over again. This musical is truly a masterpiece, being able to convey these feelings just like that.

Only a rock god could sing as Jesus in a rock opera. And they got the right one! Long live Ian Gillan!! ☮️

Yes indeed!! He sings it the best with the most feeling! Ian!!

3:12-3:38 is one of my favorite exchanges in all of musical theatre. Jesus knowing much more than Judas thought, possibly through divine intervention which means Judas has more to question (and later regret) about his choice to betray him. But Judas for now sees this as another bit of Jesus’s arrogance (“what if I just stayed here and ruined your ambition?”) This was the last time Judas could truly reconsider, but instead anger flows through him and he feels Jesus has given him reason to betray him (“Christ you deserve it”) brilliant lyrical storytelling by Tim Rice

Only ABBA to my ears, have ever been able to mix folk, jazz, rock and ballads the way that Lloyd Webber and Rice did here. They observed all the rules of music, then proceeded to smash the living crap out of ALL of them. It's what made the Seventies such a wild and innovative time. Everyone knew the rules, but more than half of the artists went in the opposite direction.

Spideybops

"A jaded Mandarin, a jaded Mandarin
Yes a jaded jade faded jaded jaded Mandarin"

Not only is that part is so catchy, it's also my favorite part of this song!
