Now You Know
Icon for Hire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seem like everywhere I go, everybody wanna know
What's it like to be a girl, in the music world

The scene is so sexist, believe me I get it, we'd probably sell more records if I flaunted my ass and chest but forget it

I work like one of the boys, and I'm as true as they get
but I'm a lady through and through, like give me some credit
I knew I'd regret it if I tried to blend in and pretend
Be something other than I am
like have you noticed I'm a woman
Didn't come to downplay it, or to play it up either
and I'm not trying pick a fight or be nobody's leader
But it feels like everybody's just a little too interested
In the fact that females can indeed make music
Our interviews, our bios, - they all make it a point
"Female Fronted Band, from Decatur, Illinois"
And just once, I'd like to see some other band's resume go out of their way to say they're fronted by a male, ok?
And while we're on it, let me say
Women don't all sound the same
Who gave us the idea that "Female Fronted" is a genre anyway?

Seem like everywhere I go, everybody wanna know
What's it like to be a girl, in the music world

Wanna make it disappear, tell 'em what they wanna hear,
If truth ain't pretty will you all stay with me
Will you love me, love me ugly

And I know it's not fair, and I can't complain,
Cuz with girl in our band, people don't look away
But you know what, it feels like they look just a little too long

stare me up and down, forget to listen to the song

I take the stage and before I even open my mouth, the audience assumes that they got us all figured out
"Oh your band's got a chick, must be some kinda trick,
there's no way she got this far without sucking somebody's"
Did you really think that's how it works, I'm not fucking eye candy
I'm here to do my job, I'll be the last man standing
Boys in crowd asking, for me to flash them, well here you go, news flash:
You're ignorant and that's that
I bet you'd never say that to your little sister
The media's got you all jacked up, little mister
Cuz girls in my position can perpetuate the cycle
walking a tightrope, don't know which way to go
Hypersexualize, or downplay your femininity
Dress like the dudes, or pray to God that you're pretty
Are you kidding me? And I don't even know who's to blame
Beauty sells, I buy it too, I'm trying to sell it back it you.

Seem like everywhere I go, everybody wanna know
What's it like to be a girl, in the music world
Wanna make it disappear, tell 'em what they wanna hear,
If truth ain't pretty will you all stay with me

Will you love me, love me ugly

So tell me, what's a woman to do-no, scratch that
Tell me what's a human being to with the fact that
What gets us ahead just holds us back more
Is a level playing field too much to ask for?
And I know that by saying it, I'm bringing attention

To an issue that might be better left unmentioned -
but someone's gotta say it, gotta call out the scene
the scene is obscene, my sanity's split at the seams

So to all of ya'll making this just about ass and tits
here to set the record straight, it don't gotta be this way
We can change the game, rearrange the way to fame
And make a bigger deal about the talent than the face
See I got little girls watching me, wanting to be like me,
And I wanna show them that they don't gotta be like me
They can do their own thing, they can rewrite the rules
They can get respect without acting like fools
So lets not make it harder than it has to be
I'll keep making music, you stop asking me

What's it like to be a girl in the entertainment world,
Cuz now you know

Overall Meaning

The song "Now You Know" by Icon for Hire speaks on the issue of gender dynamics in the music industry. In the first verse, the lead singer mentions how everywhere she goes, people want to know what it's like to be a girl in the music world. She acknowledges that the industry is sexist and that she could sell more records if she flaunted her body, like many female artists do. However, she chooses to work hard like the boys and be true to herself instead.

The second verse focuses on the stereotypes and assumptions that come with being a female in a band. The lead singer mentions that people assume they know everything about the band just because there is a woman in it. She speaks on the hypersexualization of female artists and how some women have to choose between being hypersexualized or downplaying their femininity. The chorus urges listeners to embrace the truth about female artists and to love them even if they don't fit into society's beauty standards.

The final verse addresses the larger issue of gender inequality and how it affects human beings in general. The lead singer questions why the things that get women ahead also hold them back. She urges listeners to change the game and focus more on talent than on appearance, especially for the sake of young girls who may look up to female artists. The song ends with the message that gender should not make things harder in the entertainment world, and it's time for people to be more accepting.

I gotta say, ever since my friend showed me 'Hollow'... you've become one of my favorite artists.

And you don't put off that SJW - Feminazi vibe, but I gotta say... THIS is what people should be focusing on when they want to talk about 'female empowerment'

Needless to say, any possible political points aside, you've got my respect because your music is ACTUALLY important... and not just to women and girls, hell 90% of the music that I listen to to help my mental state... are with female singers... it's like... men aren't ALLOWED to have mental defects...

Linkin Park did it... oh wait now Chester is dead.

But ah well, I'm ranting. Keep up the awesome work Icon For Hire ^^

MY FAVORITE LINE IN ANY SONG EVER!!

alot of women are missing the point of this song, saying crap like "I'm not like other girls, I don't flaunt my ass." you're proving the point of the song actually. everyone's focused on what the girl is doing.

Is she being 'slutty'? Is she dressing 'respectively'? Does she act like a man or is she nice and polite?

don't think you're special because you like sweatshirts. don't think you're basic because you like skirts and jewelry. There are no guidelines with being a girl, just wear what you want and don't concern yourself with what other people wear. it doesn't matter. it doesn't. so don't let men think you have to be different, and that being a 'normal girl' is something to be ashamed of.

Toothless

Don't have anything to add to your argument. But honestly I'm just me. I don't like the "I'm not like other girls" trope, but some truly are indifferent toward mainstream. I'm not going to sit here and explain what I do and don't like. I am female, born and raised, and I don't pride myself in not being fond or interested in stereotypical "girl" things, I just don't. But I also don't begrudge people who are. Find it fascinating people who could do make up, because I can't, and it is an art. Yet I find the people who act as though they can't function in public without their "face" on a little off putting. Little things like that. Just a lack of understanding why because honestly, I'd go out in sweatpants, a sweater, no bra, and my damp unbrushed hair from a shower to the grocery store because I'm a lazy slob, not because I'm a woman trying not to act feminine.

I was with you till the last part. I mean, men are the ones mostly buying the woman angle, but you seriously do realize that the overwhelming majority of men don't give a shit what girls wear or do right? Guys literally think a girl wearing baggy sleep clothes and bed head looks attractive. All the pressure to look perfect or amazing comes from women themselves. Most men don't even like make-up, just as an example. But women still push the idea that they need to wear it or they won't be taken seriously. If that's the case, blame other women, not men.

Ty for saying that if u didn't I would of

@Urbert Shock a lot of times it's the girl's judging other girls we are like that sometimes to eachother or just judgemental all the time

Xyanic

Not only men, there are enough women too, who are thinking the ignorant way, but the rest is just true🙇🏻‍♂️

Thank you Icon For Hire for making a song that states what I've been teaching my daughters and my son since they were little... be who you choose, don't conform to the world's ideals, and show them what you can do in spite of them. The mass media is horrible when it come to the image of a lady. I'm still deeply scarred by the way I was shaped into thinking my appearance is my most valuable asset, when I have so much more in me that makes me who I am. I'm always sickened to my core when I hear guys drooling over the way a female singer looks, they never even think about how they're judging her and not even considering the work she put into her talent or into the song.

Sailor going South

But is it bad people want hot hot guys hot girls I don't get what people are talking about male privilege I'm not trying to me rude but if you can give me proof

Rose Avery this song is amazing it shows that girls can do what they want without pretending to be something they are not
