Summer is Over
Ifield Frank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The night runs away with the day
The grass that was green is now hay
The world goes around without even a sound
And it looks like the summer is over

The rains tumble down in the sky
Young swallows have learned how to fly
The leaves that were green are no longer so green
And it looks like the summer is over

The sun and the moon take turns in the sky
The days drift on by too soon
The meadows are kissed by a cool autumn mist
Far away now is June

The birds fly away to the sun
The leaves touch the ground one by one
The breeze hurries by without even goodbye
And it looks like the summer is over

The sun and the moon take turns in the sky
The days drift on by too soon
The meadows are kissed by a cool autumn mist
Far away now is June

The birds fly away to the sun
The leaves touch the ground one by one
The breeze hurries by without even goodbye
And it looks like the summer is over

And it looks like the summer is over

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ifield Frank's song "Summer is Over" are a reflection on how quickly time passes and how summer, with its warmth and beauty, comes to an end without even a sound. The first verse speaks of how the night inevitably takes over the day, the green grass turns into dry and desolate hay, and the world keeps turning without notice. These lines set the tone for the rest of the song, which continues to observe the change of seasons and how nature transitions from one phase to another.

The second verse references the rain, which symbolizes an incoming season of autumn, while young swallows being able to fly signify the growth and maturity of life. The leaves that were once green have turned yellow, a clear indication of autumn's arrival. The image of the leaves touching the ground one by one emphasizes the gradual and delicate nature of this season. The song then highlights the fact that time keeps moving forward, and we must say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn, which is described as a "cool mist".

The last verse summarizes the feeling of loss and acceptance that comes with the end of summer. The birds fly away to the sun, and the breeze hurries by without even saying goodbye, leaving us with the realization that summer is officially over. The singer acknowledges that the meadows, which were once full of life, will soon turn into a dull and uneventful place. This song is melancholy yet beautifully written, and it allows us to reflect on how quickly time passes and how important it is to cherish each moment of summer.

I rate this performance very highly. Frank was very popular in his day. He was my moms favourite male singer

Superb orchestration really complements Frank's great treatment of this.

Thanks Bill. I did this one for a fan who requested "Summer Is Over" and also "Lovesick Blues". Frank does a wonderful job with both tunes.

One of Frank's best in my opinion and should have gone much higher in the charts, but competition was pretty stiff back then. Can't believe nobody has posted Frank's other meteorological recording 'In The Snow.' That's a great song and performance as well.
