No California
Ilsey Lyrics

We used to drive to the ocean
Lie by the waves
Bathe in the moment
Now I'm alone, I pray for rain to come
Take me away, hmm

Away from the hills full of promise
Streets full of pain
Even in winter
Bright sunny days, I pray for rain to come
Oh, but it never does

Gotta get outta here, start a whole new life
Gotta go somewhere where the sun don't shine so bright
Everything around here
Everything 'bout this place just brings me down, ooh
'Cause there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Yeah, there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Ooh

It's cold in your shadow
All that remains, ghosts in the desert
Should I run away or pray for strength to come?
I'll run away, hmm

Gotta get outta here, start a whole new life
Gotta go somewhere where the sun don't shine so bright
Everything around here
Everything 'bout this place just brings me down, ooh
'Cause there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Yeah, there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Ooh

I'll keep runnin', baby
I'll keep runnin'
'Til you stop runnin' through my mind
I'll keep lovin' you
I'll keep lovin' you
I don't really know why
I know that I

Gotta get outta here, start a whole new life
Gotta go somewhere where the sun don't shine so bright
Everything around here
Everything 'bout this place just brings me down, ooh
'Cause there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Yeah, there ain't no California without you
Without you
Yeah, there ain't no California
Ooh

I'll keep runnin', baby
I'll keep runnin'
'Til you stop runnin' through my mind

This song and video is just damn near perfect. The song is such a compelling evocation of the promise of love in 70’s California and the video perfectly reflects that era with its grainy film quality and the dry brown tones, and the sad brown van on the side of the road really clinches it. Even the guitar intro echoes vintage America tunes like Ventura Freeway. I’m an old man now and this beautifully sad song is dredging up fifty year old regrets. Love it.

Really beautifully said.

I am obsessed with this song, best new song I have heard in years. I heard it on Pandora yesterday and downloaded it immediately. I love the nod to the Crosby Stills Nash sound and the Miley Cyrus/Stevie Nicks/but even better vocals. The layers of instrumentation are fabulous and the production quality is amazing. I'd say it's way past time to come out from behind songwriting to be an artist in her own right!

Same here. Heard it on a Pandora Alternative station. I was working on a car in my shop and it Immediately caught my attention. Had to stop working and see who it was. I thought her voice was closer to Dolly Parton in certain respects. It's now in my rotation. These are the kinds of songs I'm always looking for. Love it!!

She has written for so many artists. I love the layering and the subtly of the music. All I hear is her voice and emotion behind it. I couldn't lyricise the feelings better than this.

So am I

I grew up in Texas but my dad and I always promised to live in California together. I never made it to California and he passed away there so I don’t feel the need to ever return if he’s not by my side. Thank you for such a beautiful song. I know he would have loved it.

This has me sobbing 😭 my dad is now in nursing care

What's not to love? Everything is so very good and well put-together: the structure and chord progression, the arrangement (love how the chorus blooms, then pulls back for the verses) the lyrics, the melody, the singing, them drums, the Buick 😎 ). This is one excellent recording. ❤

Tammy Rogers

Heard it on the radio the other day, feel in love with it can't wait to hear more from you! I can't stop playing it 💕
