I'm sorry, mother I'm sorry, I let you down
Well, these days I'm fine
No these days I tend to lie
I'll take the West train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by my left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

I'm sorry, brother I'm sorry, I let cha down
Well, these days you're fine
No these days you tend to lie
You'll take the West train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by your left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
But I keep coming up short

I'm sorry, lover You're sorry, I bring you down
Well, these days I try and these days I tend to lie
Kinda thought I was a mystery and then I thought I wasn't meant to be
You said yourself fantastically, "Congratulations you were all alone"

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried

But the rain won't fall for the both of us
The sun won't shine on the both of us
Believe me when I say, that I wouldn't have it any other way

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me I've tried
But I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down

And I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down
And I keep coming up short

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Imagine Dragons' song Amsterdam are a reflection of the singer's struggles with life and relationships. The first stanza expresses the singer's remorse for disappointing his mother and brother, and how he tends to lie and hide the truth. He takes the West train to Amsterdam, where he feels that he is close to the Tin man and his left brain, indicating that he wants to escape from his emotional side and focus on logic and reason. In the second stanza, the singer apologizes to his lover and admits to trying and lying, he also finds it difficult to understand his own identity and the fact that he may have been better off alone. The chorus talks about waiting for the right moment in life, which is often elusive and difficult to find. Despite trying hard, the singer finds himself coming up short, indicating his frustration with not being able to move forward in his life.

The bridge of the song talks about how the singer and his lover are going through different issues in their lives, and that the rain won't fall and the sun won't shine on them both. The singer expresses his love and acceptance of this difference and wants to stay true to himself, even if it might mean that he has to face the consequences of his actions. The final chorus talks about his determination to break free from his limitations and move forward in his life. Despite struggling and coming up short a number of times, the singer is optimistic about his future and is willing to fight for it.

Lyrics
I'm sorry for everything, oh, everything I've done
Am I out of touch? Am I out of my place?
When I keep saying that I'm looking for an empty space
Oh, I'm wishin' you're here but I'm wishin' you're gone
I can't have you and I'm only gonna do you wrong
Oh, I'm gonna mess this up
Oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again
I'm sorry for everything, oh, everything I've done
From the second that I was born, it seems I have a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved
Am I out of luck? Am I waiting to break?
When I keep saying that I'm looking for a way to escape
Oh, I'm wishing I had what I'd taken for granted
I can't have you when I'm only gonna do you wrong
Oh, I'm gonna mess this up
Oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again
I'm sorry for everything, oh, everything I've done
From the second that I was born, it seems I have a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved
In the meantime, we let it go
At the roadside we used to know
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away
At the bay side, we used to show
In the moonlight, we let it go
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away
And there's always time to change your mind
Oh, there's always time to change your mind
Oh, love, can you hear me?
Oh, let it drift away
I'm sorry for everything, oh, everything I've done
From the second that I was born, it seems I have a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved
In the meantime, we let it go
At the roadside we used to know
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away
At the bay side, we used to show
In the moonlight, we let it go
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away (let me make it up to you)
And there's always time to change your mind
Oh, there's always time to change your mind
Oh, love, can you hear me?
Oh, let it drift away

Possible interpretation:

The song "Shots" appears to address themes of guilt, regret, and self-criticism.

The song begins with an apology and a sense of remorse: "I'm sorry for everything, oh everything I've done." This suggests that the narrator is acknowledging their mistakes and the impact they've had on the people around them.

The chorus describes a feeling of inadequacy and self-sabotage. The narrator questions whether they are out of place or seeking something unattainable. There's a sense of self-destruction when they say they want someone here but also want that person to go away, believing they will only cause pain.

The phrase "I'm gonna mess this up" seems to reflect a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence, leading them to believe they are destined to repeat the same mistakes.

The second part of the song mentions the idea of letting go and changing their mind. It can be interpreted as a hope that the narrator can overcome their issues and find a way to break free from their own mental traps.

Overall, "Shots" seems to be a reflection on self-doubt, self-reflection, and the struggle against one's own inner demons. It's a song that explores the complexity of human emotions, including the desire for change and redemption despite past mistakes.
