Body Parts
Ina Wroldsen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You wanna be perfect
Like a work of art
Like what you see in magazines
You wanna be perfect
It's gonna be worth it
And you've worked so hard
Been skippin' lunch for chewin' gum
It's gonna be worth it

In your bedroom lookin' in the mirror
Weighin' up your options, battlin' your scales
In your head, screamin' open up your eyes

But salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
Perfect is worthless if you lose yourself
Valuation
Never came from changin' body parts
Perfect is worthless if you bruise your heart for it

You wanna go places
Like a risin' sun
You wanna soar and open doors
You wanna go places
You wanna be famous (famous)
Wanna become someone
And like the waves you're bound to break
And think of their faces

In your bedroom thinkin' of tomorrow
You're just gonna start starvin' worse
In your head screamin' open up your eyes

But salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
Perfect is worthless if you lose yourself
Valuation
Never came from changin' body parts
Perfect is worthless if you bruise your heart for it

I fought for such a long time (never came from changin' body parts)
To get here
I fought this war, now I love my scars
I fought for such a long time (never came from changin' body parts)

And I swear
You're so much more than all your body parts

Salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
You're so much more than all your body parts
Salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
You're so much more than all your body parts
Salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
Perfect is worthless if you lose yourself
Valuation
Never came from changin' body parts (oh)
Perfect is worthless if you bruise your heart for it

I fought for such a long time (salvation never came from changin' body parts)
To get here, to get here
I fought this war, now I love my scars
I fought for such a long time (salvation never came from changin' body parts)
And I swear, and I swear
You're so much more than all your body parts

Salvation
Never came from changin' body parts
You're so much more than all your body parts
But salvation

Never came from changin' body parts
You're so much more than all your body parts

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Body Parts" by Ina Wroldsen deal with the issue of self-esteem and the desire for perfection in terms of appearance. The first verse acknowledges the pressure to be perfect and to look like the models in magazines. The second verse delves deeper into the struggle, with the singer feeling trapped in their own body, constantly scrutinizing themselves and making harmful choices like skipping meals. Throughout the song, the refrain emphasizes that salvation and self-worth cannot be found in changing one's body parts or through external validation like fame or material success.

The bridge of the song provides a moment of hope and inspiration, as the singer shares that they have fought their own battles and have learned to love their scars. The final repetitions of the refrain emphasize the point that self-worth comes from within and is not dependent on external factors.

Overall, "Body Parts" is a powerful statement on the pervasive pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards and the importance of valuing oneself beyond physical appearance.

i dont understand why she was not credited for " how deep is your love ". They only credited dicilpes, who sung like 4 words.

I love this song. I’ve personally struggled with a lot of insecurities and even an eating disorder. Even when I knew it wasn’t healthy, I thought throwing up would fix everything. My sister found out, and let me listen to this song. It really opened up my eye. The message delivers. Now I haven’t thrown up in 3 weeks and I feel a lot better. I’ve found out there are so much more ways to change your body, without starving yourself, hurting yourself or drugging yourself. I have found out that every body is different and i think everyone’s body is amazing. I think we should all love ourselves more.
