No Poem
Inara George Lyrics

Once you open your mouth
I never like what you say
A carnation
To cover your lips
When you speak I fall away
The exceptions
I spend time just trying to forget
Away, away, will you fall away
Let's pretend that we never met
Keep yourself within yourself
For all that you say it never gets better
In yourself within yourself
If I was you I wouldn't talk, I'd just keep dancing
If all your moves were words
And back steps were things you've denied
You've said, that's right, your dead
I'm dumb, but not deaf and blind
Inara George's song "No Poem" is about the disappointment of someone's words and actions not aligning with the singer's expectations. The first line, "You're no poem," sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer seems to have an idealized view of this person, but once they open their mouth, the singer is let down because they never like what they say. The line, "A carnation to cover your lips," suggests that the singer wishes the person would just stay silent because when they speak, they disappoint.
Throughout the song, the singer is in a state of disillusionment with this person. They spend time trying to forget them and would rather pretend they never met. The lines, "Keep yourself within yourself / For all that you say it never gets better," suggest that the singer believes this person should keep their thoughts to themselves because it only leads to disappointment. The singer even goes so far as to say that if they were this person, they wouldn't talk at all, they'd just keep dancing.
The final line, "You've said, that's right, your dead / I'm dumb, but not deaf and blind," is a final rejection of this person's words. The singer is showing that they are not fooled by sweet words or flattery and instead will continue to hold onto their own beliefs and opinions.
Overall, "No Poem" is a song about disillusionment and disappointment in someone who does not live up to expectations. It's a reminder that actions often speak louder than words.
