Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah
Indelible Grace Music Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore;
Bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing waters flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
Strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee;
Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.

Land me safe on Canaan's side
Bid my anxious fears, bid my anxious fears

Land me safe on Canaan's side
Bid my anxious fears, bid my anxious fears, goodbye

Overall Meaning

The song "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah" is a plea for guidance and protection as the singer journeys through life, which is described as a barren land. The singer acknowledges their weakness but trusts in the strength of God's hand to hold them up. The metaphor of bread from heaven is used to ask for sustenance, both physical and spiritual, to be showered on the singer forevermore. The crystal fountain, which symbolizes the source of life, healing, and purity, is invoked to cleanse and refresh the singer, who is asking for divine guidance through a fire and cloudy pillar, just like the Israelites were led through the desert in the Old Testament. The refrain "Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield" which resounds through the song, acknowledges the power of God to save and protect the singer.

Finally, the song ends on a triumphant note, with the singer asking to be landed safely on the other side of the Jordan river, which symbolizes death or the passage to the afterlife, and where they will become a resident of Canaan, or heaven, where they will forever give songs of praises to God.

The wolf will reside for
a while with the lamb, l
And with the young goat
the leopard will lie down,
And the calf and the lion 1
and the fattened animal
will all be together;
And a little boy will lead
them.The cow and the bear will
feed together,
And their young will lie down
together.
The lion will eat straw like
the bull.
8 The nursing child will play
over the lair of a cobra,
And a weaned child will
put his hand over the den
of a poisonous snake.
9 They will not cause any
harm
Or any ruin in all my holy
mountain,
Because the earth will
certainly be filled with the
knowledge of Jehovah
As the waters cover the sea.

This is indeed a barren land. I look to God. May he feed me with the bread of heaven till I want no more.

Never more true than in these dark days of virus and distance and fear . But for those who fear the Lord all other fears dash away for he is near and faithful to his own. Amen
