@Tanya Luchko Did you try drinking some very warm or hot beverage? And take Advil as soon as you recognize the pain.

Lifting may exacerbate the issue since it will temporarily increase inflammation (which is the root cause of Costrocondritis) but the scientific literature basically says the amount of systemic inflammation caused by even the hardest workouts isn't statistically significant.
You may need to adjust your programming for a while and not lift quite as heavy or dial back the volume for a few weeks and see if that helps. See if bench press specifically worsens the issue and do another upper body pressing exercise like overhead press.

I didn't mention that I also have mild asthma and I'll take my albuterol inhaler as a last ditch effort.

Taking turmeric supplements may also help. Hopefully this helps you.

*Ultimately*, the biggest correlation I've noticed for myself is too much total life stress at once plus the cold causes it for me.

I’ve been to the ER twice for chest pain and no DR has ever told me this was a possibility. They say they have no idea why I’m having pain here. I have shortness of breath especially after I eat. The anxiety and constant fear of death while I’m sleeping has caused insomnia and anxiety. Glad this came up in my feed. I’ll be bringing this up with my dr ASAP. Thank you.

Had the same thing. I have been to A&E 4 times. Crying of the pain,telling that I cant even carry a bag,stabbing pain between my ribs,cannot breath,my pulse shooting up to 135.
I've been told Im young go home,take paracetamol,my body will compensate whatever problem I have.
Disgusting behaviour.....
I found a private doctor,he told me in 5 minutes this is what Im having. Gave me pills and showed me stretching exercises.

I'm a retired powerlifter. I'm 64 years old. Had this pain the first time when I was about 52. Tried all the stretches in the beginning. Seemed to get worse. Tried hanging from pull up bar for 15-20 seconds for about 3 sets. Continued this for several days. I think your treatment with the softball may be the best thing I've tried. Thanks a lot. Doing bench press with straight bar and weighted dips may have irritated it in the beginning (along with my age). Using dumbbells instead on bench and not taking dips to the extreme stretch allow me to continue to work without the irritation. Your videos are very informative.

I have been trying to figure this out for 2 months now. Went to the urgent care, found out I was a completely healthy 26 year old, just with this issue most likely. I have a cardiologist appointment next week but wow, you pointed out right where my pain is! I’m really glad I got all my blood tests done, gives peace of mind. It’s still an annoying pain nonetheless though.

@Project Soul Nope. I did go to a cardiologist though and he thinks it’s my untreated anemia making my heart work harder. He checked my chest and I had an ultrasound on it as well. Everything is fine minus my anemia.

I’ve had sternum pain for 3 years now. I went to the ER once and had a subsequent visit with a cardiologist with numerous tests. Each time they said my heart was very healthy and I left relieved but still so confused.

As a 20 year old, I was incredibly alarmed when chest pain struck me whilst in my college class. I left immediately to see my doctor, as I thought I was having a heart attack! I should have known better, as it only hurt when I took a really deep breath, or physically manipulated the ribs near the sternum. Tried your method and right away, my back popped and I had instant relief. The tightness is gone, still some lingering inflammation but the issue is far more manageable.

I was just diagnosed with Costochondritis. Urgent care and 2 days in the hospital with no diagnosis was so frustrating. I’ve been in so much pain that I couldn’t sleep. Went to see a doctor and she diagnosed me in 20 minutes. So excited to come across your video so now I can work on getting back to normal. Thank you!!

I'm 35, male and in fairly good health. I lift heavy very weights, do MMA fight training and have a decent pain tolerance. The pain from Costrochondritis has woken me up from sleep several times since I was about 30 and is the most intense and overwhelming pain I've ever felt(along with proctalgia fugax like once a year), bringing me to tears a couple of times. I've never been to the emergency room for this but have thought very seriously about calling 911 or waking up my wife because I don't think I would have been safe to drive to the hospital with such distracting pain.

Taking NSAIDS as soon as possible seems to help minimize the duration and intensity. I often find that a symptom that accompanies this is bubbly burps. I usually will take simethicone along with the NSAIDS to aid in burping which helps to return breathing to normal. Nearly always I find that I experience these episodes during the fall or winter when the air is colder and the symptoms seem to be exacerbated by the colder air. To help with this, I will drink very warm water and breathe in the hot water vapor.

Oh my goodness! Thanks for your input on this. So my husband said to drink sprite, it’ll probably help and guess what? It didn’t. It made it really bad and now I’m begging for warm water. I also have a heating pad with me and took 1000mg of Tylenol at 5:30pm. It’s now 8:45pm and I drank sprite at 8:20pm. Now I regret having a cold drink.

Hi. Have you recovered from it? How often did you take NSAIDS ? I started having some mild pains in my chest a month ago. Check heart and esophagus. They are ok. But pain increased after lifting 🏋️‍♀️😖I realised that I have costohondritis 😞and it is getting worse😢 I kind of depressed because can’t lift😫😭😭😭did you have to take the break from lifting? @freneticfanatic yes, I have a lot of hot tea. Also been using Turmeric in quite high doses because of knees tendinitis. But in this case it doesn’t look like it helps much. All of this started after I had my vaccination and then COVID. Maybe immune response 🤷‍♀️not sure . After recovering from COVID two weeks later started having pain right in the middle of breastbone. Now it spreader all over my ribs 😢and yes, I have noticed that the pain exacerbates after me training the upper body.

Thanks for this, I’ve had chest pain on the left side for almost 7 weeks now and having been to the hospital and doctor who told me my heart and chest were fine I was worried they may be wrong however after doing this with a tennis ball for the first time, I feel like it’s made an instant impact. Very thankful for finding this video. 3 trips to ER, many ECG's, blood tests and an angiogram all finding nothing wrong but still feeling wretched and getting more and more anxious as time went by thinking they must have missed something. My doctor diagnosed Costochondritis yesterday and it fits so well. Tried the ball procedure on my upper back and hit some fair tender/painful areas. Again thank you.

I’ve had mine for 10 years. When It first started, I thought I was dying. So I went to see different doctors, took x rays, did my first MRI, first EKG test for my heart, breathing test for if I had asthma and NOTHING seem to be wrong with me. Pulmonary specialist even looked at me like I was crazy and was like what do YOU THINK is wrong with u? I was so pissed because they all thought I was just making this up. Thousands of dollars wasted and felt helpless. No worse feeling than when someone tells you that it’s all in your head. Anyways several docs later and finally one doctor said I know what you have. It’s Costochondritis and I felt a little hope because at least I was diagnosed with something. Anyways throughout the years I’ve had my good & bad days. MOSTLY good where I’ve learned to live with it and deal with it. I can go weeks even months without pain then all of a sudden I get a Flare up and it can last a couple days or a week or so. I’ve read about it’s supposed to go away on it’s own but it just all depends on the person. By now I’ve realized mine is chronic and it’s just always going to be apart of me which I’ve accepted and fine with. Just have to take better care of yourself and eat better that will help out a lot and exercise. Anyways blessing to all and trust me it’s not the end of the world of you have this yes It can suck sometimes because it’s painful but you will get used to it and be able to maintain having it. @Elias Takura I don’t know what you have because I’m not a doctor. So it wouldn’t be right for me to tell you that yes it’s Costochondritis or not it’s not. You just got an X Ray done which doesn’t show everything so it could be something else or might not be. It does sound like some of the same stuff I’ve been going through but you need to go ask your doctor if maybe you have costochondritis. I don’t want to say yes that’s what it is then you don’t get checked out again and it’s something else. So please go get checked out again

I literally had the same thing as you. Legit went through many doctors, e.r visits and they said there was nothing wrong. They even told me to go to a neurologist. But mine started after covid. Now when I feel the pain in my chest, I just extend my chest and it pops. I get really bad flare-ups though out the day but once I "crack/pop" my chest, it goes away. It gets painful at times

@sdaten i used the actual frame of the door itself not the doorknob. With the door open, the edge of the door frame creates about a 90° angle, that edge is what i pressed the area between my spine and shoulderblade against as i did the stretches. Hopefully this is a little more descriptive, and i hope you get better.

Edit: i feel 100% better btw, and i did this a few times a day for about a week or two. That pinched nerve pain went away after about 3 days of doing this. Dont overdo it though, it just takes time and these stretches, overdoing it wont make it heal faster and might be a detriment.

I have this issue as well. I had three separate ER visits with severe chest pain. One hospital stay overnight. It was very traumatic, they drew my blood on the hour to make sure no cardiac issues were happening. The staff member who drew my blood one of the times couldn’t get the stick right. It was so painful and I ended up with phlebitis on my right hand. I got no sleep and no relief for my pain. The next morning they told me there was nothing wrong with me and sent me home and told me to take ibuprofen. I think they thought I was drug seeking or something. I remember leaving in tears because after all of that I had no answers and was treated terribly. I just resolved to live with the discomfort. I will give these techniques a try thank you.

This is so similar to my story. I visited the ER 5 times since March. They treated me like I was some kind of hypochondriac since I'm only 35. But I was standing there gasping for air. They didn't do much. They took my blood and said I have to take ibuprofen. The lung specialist even said I was looking for excuses since I'm fine. That was so traumatic to hear since I was visibly short of breath. They said I was just too stressed out. Even called it covid stress. Yeah right. My gp says I have tietze or costochondritis due to a a-symptomatic covid infection. (so the best if both worlds unfortunately) well it's been there for 7 months and it's still around. Getting very short of breath like right chest isn't expanding. Feeling like only 1 lung left to use. Chest is so sore.

NJ GeeZ-TheNetherlands ohh I’m so sorry. My first round lasted over six months. I took nsaids when it was at the worst pain level then I stopped taking them because they are not good for you long term. The rest of the time I just deal with the pain. It will go away. The recurring episodes now only last a couple of days or sometimes a week. Take care of yourself. I hope it gets better sooner rather than later.

This is exactly what I’m experiencing. I’ve been to the ER on the three occasions and did all the tests. ECG, blood , X-ray. Doctors told me it’s not my heart. It’s skeletal. The feeling is like it’s Gout, but only on your rib cage. When it flares up it a killer pain. I might have to live with this is, off and on. I want to thank you for making this video, and I’ll definitely try it.

I’m 22 and I went to the ER a few months ago for the same reason. At that point my doctor had already told me I had costochrondritis but I had never had such tight chest pain like that previously. My sternum always cracks very loud when I stretch, so we’ve been wondering if its from that. It’s also suspected that I have slipping rib syndrome, and so that’s where my debilitating back pain is coming from… I have tried foam rolling my mid and upper back but it brings on that incredibly sharp chest pain.. would that be because of the rib that pops in and out?

I have had the same throbbing pain under my right chestbone area for a week. Like his case, the doctors could not find anything wrong with me. This looks exactly like my problem. The pain for me is annoying when I sit, and only feels better when I stand or lie down stretched out to open the rib cage. I hope it goes away because it is so annoying.

I was diagnosed with costochondritis in 2019. Know one could tell me how to deal with it and has been one of the worst experiences of my life. This year alone I probably did about 7 MRIs, physical therapy, was in the hospital for days, and haven't worked out in about two years. It was really depressing, fortunately I found this video, and realized I'm not alone. I've been using the back pod for about a week now and my body has done a 180. Thank you Bob and Brad for this video. You two are greatly appreciated and even though it's not completely gone, it's way more manageable now. And I feel I can workout again.

Thank you Bob and Brad! I wish this was mainstream info!!! I tried it and had (almost) instant relief. My pain was from a popped rib while rolling at a jiu jitsu class. It doesn’t seem to radiate into my shoulders and back, it just hurts in my left rib. Also, if I lay on my left side fir too long at night it can cause the pain.

I have two different pains one is a deeper, duller throbbing in the middle of my left breast/pec, and there's a lower one straight down from there, not quit oblique but not quite middle of abs, but definitely where my ribs are below my chest, and the pain in this abdominal part is crazy sharp and stabbing like y'all have described. Debilitating until I get into a curled up position or something to make it go away. When I exercise my abs out, it tends to inflame this crazy thing. Very very painful. Do y'all think both of these things are costiochondritis or just the ab thing or neither?

A little backstory- was hospitalized and all they could come up with was pericarditis and pleural & heart effusions, but was bedridden for a while & CRP numbers were sky high, intense pain and sickness for a couple months. It seemed to be smoking-related, blunts with weed gave me hints of the chest pain described here for years, but nothing major until this event. Thanks for reading y'all. It means the world. This stuff is scary.

I have hEDS and RA. Great combo. I started aquatic PT a few weeks ago and on Tuesday my PT had me do a bunch of upper back exercises. I woke up on Wednesday feeling okay, but on Thursday? My chest was KILLING me. I’ve had a costo flare before so I knew what it was, but hearing the hypermobility theory makes SO much sense coupled with the PT exercises I’ve been doing. Ive had costochondritis since I was around 16 years old and I am 20 years old now. I have it in my 4th rib and it is a very dull pain, only gets sharp when I breathe too deeply or stretch my body in a way its not used to. It IS located on my LEFT side and I had major concerns that it was a heart issue. I watched Bob & Brad's older Costochondritis video and found the standup/sitdown stretches to be quite relieveing! Another thing that doesnt make the pain any better and in fact makes it worse, is my substance use specifically stimulants. Even when I drink coffee or an energy drink I will get increased pain. The drug I use that creates the most discomfort is cocaine. Not only is my heart more amplified for further worry of it being a heart issue, but I catch myself really tensing up my left pectoral muscle along with my shoulder and arm. When he said "I pressed that one spot, and WOW" I know exactly that feeling. I was driving one day with the pain and I started pressing around and I hit the spot dead on. It was super painful and it felt like an intense tightening of my pectoral muscle but only on a dot shaped area, no more bigger than a dime or penny. It was honestly excruitiating I had to pull over. It felt like there was a lighter to my skin combined with intense tightening and a hot cramp. It faded within 30 minutes, progressively getting less and less painful, but the first 5 seconds of pressing it were the most painful.

My doctor prescribed me an Anti-Inflammatory cream called "Diclofenac 10%" in Versapro. It works wonders for me. I always have it on me incase it starts to flame up, I rub it all over the left side of my body from right below my collar bone, to where my ribs end on my abdomen. Its especially helpful if you accidentially hit that pinpoint spot that causes excrutiating pain. Apply this cream and the pain will be gone in less than 2 minutes.

I took a break from coffee for 14 days.. by day 10 most of the pain had disappeared.
I then relapsed.
Coffee in itself is a drug.

Thank you for this vid and explaining how it could come from back issues! I suspected this when my lower left rib in front hurt - Doc had told me this was due to back damage (the nerve injured that travels around to the front of the rib) from a car wreck years ago.
In May I went to ER - pain, hurting so bad I was queezy, sweating (from pain) ... cold chills. Had just turned 60, my little brother had his first heart attack at 49 - so yeah, I headed to ER. They said everything checked out ok - blood ok, heart ok ... then said it must have been a panic attack. Pissed me off - I said the only panic I had was from thinking I was having a heart attack! I have a list of exercises the pt guy gave me years ago (after the wreck) - brushed them off and started doing them again. Not totally gone yet, but at least it is tolerable now.

Ever since I went for my max bench of 355 lbs(at 190) my ribs and chest, specifically my sternum have been banged up. Going for crazy numbers in weight training is definitely not for the faint of heart. But stretching and warm bath sit downs definitely have helped me feel relief from this.

Wow! You are saying the exact things I have just been experiencing. I have had 3 ECG’s (I’m from Wales, UK)! I also have Fibromyalgia and Sjogren’s Syndrome so I asked my rheumatologist about it who said I have costochondritis. All 3 ECG’s were perfect which really ruled out heart problems. It really is a scary thing to experience and once I had stopped worrying that also helped the pains. The palpitations were so scary. I’m now going to concentrate on exercises and posture! I had costochondritis with swelling (Tietze syndrome) for 18 months, accompanied by this regular knot in the upper-mid back corresponding to the rib. Blood test showed high inflammation levels, I though it was rheumatoid arthritis, basically. In hindsight, I'm convinced it was due to muscle imbalance and tightening up - after having spent many years doing mostly bench presses at the gym and not enough back/lats/abs. I started doing a lot of rowing, yoga, towel stretches, avoided slouching on the sofa, and over a period of 8 weeks the Costo has almost gone entirely.

I've been living with this condition for more than a year. I think it all started thanks to my allergies (my sneezes are quite violent 😅), first it was a slight cracking sound on my chest from time to time after sneezing/coughing but then it was pain on the left side on my chest, went to the doctor and everything was right with my heart. My anxiety doesn't really help with the condition and mainly because heart disease runs in my family. The days I feel pain all I do is rest, avoid using my left arm to lift heavy stuff and if the pain gets uncomfortable I take an anti-inflammatory.

Thank you for this video. I have RA and osteoporosis. My rheumatologist refuses to even acknowledge the pain I have in my chest it's almost constantly aching from the back to the front. Glad you did a video on this.
I have been to the ER twice, I've been to the cardiologist twice and my heart is healthy.
Going to the chiropractor helped some, I found some relief after about 2 months of going.
I finally bought the Back Pod after finding the video on YouTube of the same New Zealand doctor. This helped the most.
I use it every other day and my symptoms are mostly under control.
My symptoms: chest pain in the middle radiates to my left side, also have arm pain near my elbow (I've had multiple panic attacks because of this).
I now use the back pod, go to the chiropractor once a month, try to sleep on my back (I'm a side sleeper), work on stretching and try not to rest my arm on the chairs arms rest. I feel for anyone that has this. It's very scary.

Same for me. I have had the throbbing pain under my right chestbone area for over a week. Like this case, the doctors could not find anything wrong with me. This looks exactly like my problem. The pain for me is annoying when I sit, and only feels better when I stand or lie down stretched out to open the rib cage. I hope it goes away because it is so annoying.

Have you gotten any relief? If so, what did you do? I went to the emergency room in very bad pain, because of this, last Saturday. They gave me steroid pack and naproxen. I stopped taking the naproxen and tonight I'm in pain. I just started the steroid pack today.

@Ceretha Rice My doctor couldn't see anything on my X-rays. I actually started seeing a chiropractor. My chiropractor examined my movement and realized that my ribs were locked in place. I wasn't able to help this on my own. I see her once a week now and that's been helping give my ribs movement again. They start to lock up again my mid week, but chiro has been helping. I had no idea just how locked my ribs were until they weren't locked anymore!

@aregua1 Might be worth seeing a chiropractor. I recently started seeing one and she found that my ribs were locked. I see her every week now. I hadn't realized how locked my ribs were until she helped me get them moving again. They do start to lock up again by mid week, but I'd rather have a few days where I have more mobility and less pain. Opposed to constant, intense pain and reduced mobility.

I'm kinda scared to go to chiropractors though, because I have 6 screws and 3 rods in my lower back, and I'm scared they may injure me. I'm going to go though. Hopefully they don't have to go that far down. Right now I'm on a heating pad. It's giving me some relief. I took xrays, and a cat scan, everything looks good. It's crazy how they don't know how to diagnose this.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I went to sleep and I woke up about an hour later with an extreme level of pain in my sternum. It was so uncomfortable I couldn't even lay still, I kept trying to stretch and twist and compress and just do anything to make the pain lessen, but nothing helped. The longer it went on, the more terrifying it became. I thought maybe I was having a heart attack, so I tried to focus and feel very specifically where the pain was actually coming from, and I determined right along the side of my sternum where it connects to my lowest ribs. So I was able to determine the pain was coming from my actual ribcage, and not internally, so my panic subsided. This lasted about an hour, and eventually I got up, went to my freezer and grabbed an ice pack and placed it in the middle of my chest. After a few minutes, it stopped.

Now I know what to go for when it's happening to lower that inflammation quickly, so I don't have to roll around in agony for an hour. It was so bad that night, that my entire soloplex felt bruised for a week, and even though this was back in early March, the very bottom of my sternum where my ribs come together, is still sensitive to pressure.

Great info here, gents! I have had a couple bouts of this in recent years, each time initiated by over-reaching across a hard barrier like a table. This would cause a sudden sharp rib pain near the fulcrum and a feeling of the ribs folding. It always means a week or two of great discomfort in the rib area, and sure enough it radiates around the backside. Coughing, sneezing, laughing are no joke! These cases were always on the right side of my chest. And wouldn't you know, I'm just now getting over a case — today was the first day of almost-normal. Whew!

I have same issues. I alway feel like I have anxiety and tightness in my chest. I used a tennis ball on my back at various points supporting it with arms and legs to adjust the right amount of pressure. It gave me instant relief when I stood up. So I will keep working at this. @Johnny DV saw a GP for about 2 minutes. Listened to my heart & lungs, said they were fine so the pain was probably costochondritis. Not exactly a faith-inducing process but the symptoms fit. Idk. Hope you can resolve your pains sorry to hear about that.

MINE IS GONE: I thought I would never get rid of my costochondritis, then I saw the inventor of the backpod describe how the real problem is with the ribs in your back (and has nothing to do with your chest, where the pain manifests). The ribs in the back become locked in place at the attachment point to the spine. To cure costo, you have to break this up to get the ribs loose and moving fluidly again. My idea was to use a percussion massage gun (I used a Hypervolt, but I’m sure any of them would work the same way) to very aggressively massage the rib cage close to the spine and out towards the shoulder blades, and it worked very quickly. Within a week, I was much better, and back to lifting weights within 2 weeks. I did nothing else besides this. Maybe 5 minutes per side every night. Note that it seems to work better to massage both sides of your back, even if the pain only appears on one side of your chest.

I felt it was my obligation to pass this along to anyone else suffering from this nasty (and never properly treated) condition. Good luck! Ps. Mine does come back if I go too long without massaging periodically but goes away quickly if I start back up.

At 60, I have just discovered this, sadly. But honestly, I've had issues with this since age 10 or 11. I was taken to the doctors at age 10 and was checked by a cardiologist and they found nothing and told my foster parents that it "might" be growing pains. Fast forward, age 20 something something, I was fitted with a portable cardio machine for 24 or so hours and it showed nothing as well, all normal and ok with my heart. I have worked out since middle school with weights all the way through present day. I'd forgotten all this so none of my doctors are aware of this condition of mine. But, I'm going to have to tell them since now I remember. It has been keeping me up at night because it does tighten while I'm sleeping (my chest). I get up sit around, relax and I can feel it loosen. I want to take Ibuprofen but I read it affect asthma, I have taken Ibuprofen in my early days for muscular pain when I worked out. So lets see what my doctor says so that I can have a good nights sleep.

I've been to the doctors multiple times and ER twice with this. Felt like an absolute idiot as they couldn't find anything after xrays, ECGs, auscultation. I had just accepted I was going to develop something nasty when I was older. Then last night I finally noticed some tenderness in that area described. I'm a final year physio student myself! Holy crap. This helped soo much. I did the chest stretching from a different video and they didn't help much. I then used my foam roller on my back and it instantly took away the pain in my chest... This is literally a godsend. Thank you sooo much, I went to the ER many times thinking I was having a heart attack and also thought I had lung cancer. Turns out it's just my back is really tight and I'm assuming it's a lot stronger than my chest because I do many pullups.

I hit the gym 6 to 7 times a week and this caused so much stress on me not knowing what's wrong exactly. Had EKG and made sure it wasn't the heart. Been taking it easy on the chest exercises but never realized it was actually the tightness of the back and scapula that's the cause. I had this aching around the sternum for a while and decided to ignore it for maybe 1-2 months. When I decided to do a dip exercise from my chairs, I felt a lot of tightness around my chest. When I was foam rolling my back after, that's when I snapped the muscle near the sternum and the exact chest pain as described in the video occurred. Breathing felt heavier but only because it was painful to breathe and expand my chest, it was sore to the touch, and it was painful to sneeze.

I never thought I was getting a heart attack but I feel saved by this video.

I was recommended to lean on the ball on the wall first which I can control pressure vs laying on it which seemed harder to limit the pressure. This absolutely helps loosen my back before the tightness creeps around the front.

I got it first when I was 17 and have only experienced it 2 other times and again just a couple days ago. What helps is no sudden movements when you start feeling the inflammation setting in, especially in the morning when waking up. I made the mistake of sitting up quickly one morning thinking it was just soreness from my work out and I heard a pop coming from my chest and suddenly couldn't breath or move. I was stuck in bed all day and when I finally got up it was so painful to just support my upper body. Definitely thought I was gonna die that morning lol look up stretches not just these roller. They will help to prevent it from happening more often, while the foam roller just alleviates the immediate pain.

The SAME thing happened to me in 2016 ( 48 y old at the time) and I went to the ER I can tell you it's scary. Saw Cardiologist got Echocardiogram in 2019. Heart was deemed to be fine, but it's annoying as it forces you to access what you're feeling EVERY TIME and during this period(Covid-19) it's difficult to see doctors.

This is really helpful information. However I think it's important to note that costochondritis can also be caused by inflammation. I've had it twice. Once when I was pregnant, and it was excruciatingly painful. I was in bed for two weeks and Was right after I had a double chocolate ice cream and for me dairy is very inflammatory. The second time I had it as a result of taking Flagyl And I subsequently discovered that Flagyl can cause the release of a lot of free radicals. So when I get it I treat it with anti-inflammatories particularly Boswellia Serrata and i go back to eating a very strict antiinflammatory diet.

Just had a ct scan, 3 xrays this week and 3 blood tests thinking my heart or lungs were messed up but all came back good and normal levels. No clots no tumors no nothing, but still chest pain. One spot in between my rib by my heart is super sore so after the 5th ER visit this week I was told it was chest inflammation and a sore intercostal

Hey just a quick question, do you happen to be able to feel some lumps or swellings on your chest wall? My husband is struggling with this and I'm suspecting fibromyalgia. He's getting a CT in a week but my mind's overthinking at the speed of light. He has a palpable lump on his left side and I'm super duper worried. This really is a thing. Once cleared from the ER, Cardiologist, and General Practitioner. It's best to accept and work towards getting better which takes some time. Back pod and chiropractor visits, daily door stretchers and NSAID (if suitable) with routine exercise. Shortness of breath is just a way of central nervous system sending a signal to reduce lungs expansion in order for the rib cage to minimize stretching since there's join inflammation. This shortness in breath will flare up the anxiety (completely normal process but nerve wrecking). During anxiety its best to keep calm and trust your body. Like any healing rest as much as possible. We're all in this together and will come out of it :)

I want to say for myself I probably developed this condition by years of weight training and drumming - it is a scary condition that really mimics cardio stuff - and doctors know so little about it - I just for my back pod today and working with it I already feel it's hitting part of the back that the ball I was using before did not. Going to keep at it for awhile and really work at it - hopefully it will improve my condition and lots of others on here as well!

I’ve been dealing with this for 3+months and it’s been horrible. I haven’t been able to do much of anything which is a real challenge being a single mama. It took so many dr’s, an X-ray, MRI, chiro care…. Finally saw a spine dr and found out I have costochondritis. I’ve been absolutely miserable. Anyway, hoping for some relief. I've been struggling with this to the point where a sneeze or cough was excruciating. I am feeling better now, because I stopped sleeping on my side, and I stopped cracking my back as much throughout the day. I was trying to get relief by pressing on the back of my head cracking my upper back that way, since it felt in connection with where the costo pain was, when I pressed like that. But I think that since I was doing this too many times throughout the day, the strain was aggravating it.

Since I made myself stop sleeping on my side, and I limited my self to cracking my back only about twice a day, the pain has gone way down.

I got a little, but not much change from stretches and trying to press on my back ribs.

You guys are crazy good, I've seen the doctor three weeks ago all is good. I started getting pains thought it was (the big one ) but this went on for days. Finally I saw your video and I believe I pulled my muscle pulling the shopping cart up the stairs. Yep that's it the cart was about forty pounds of groceries . Julia - doctors know so little about this condition too - that does not help our cause either :( i've been to the ER three times in the last three months - and everything on my heart comes back fine thankfully :) but my pain is still there - doctors tell me it is a muscular related condition but will not diagnose me with Costo - told to take advil or tylenol for pain relief - both do nothing for me sadly but the topical cream Voltaren does thankfully.

I think I've got this condition. Chronic chest area pain, focused mostly in the sternum but also happens all over pecs/ribs. It's dull & not severe but very scary. I've quit lifting all together for 3 weeks now. Quite depressing and just hoping it goes away with rest and walking. So far it is not. I was wondering if it was long covid from 2 years ago, the flu, heart attack, hear disease, or something else.
I guess i'll give some of these rolling devices a try but not spending $70 bucks on that pod thing.

Actually I found out the most important during a rib flare or costochondritis which I am experiencing since last weekend is to use the palm to pull back the ribs while coughing or changing position in bed while sleeping. This brings immense relief while waiting for the ribs and muscles to repair.

For context, 5 yrs ago I had a triple heart bypass, not nice, rough time. 2 yrs ago started having chest pains come and go but became more intense. Over the next year and a half and having delays due to lock downs and such I finally had my heart pretty much cleared of anything overly wrong with it, a 50% block on one artery. The pain became even more intense and on 2 occasions had to have an ambulance to take me to A&E. On the 2nd occasion a cardiac rehab nurse spoke to me about Costochondritis. Never heard of it before at all but all that was said fitted perfectly. Got meds for it and in time it went away only to return a month or so later and I still deal with it today but at least I know that I'm not about to drop dead with a heart attack and able to cope with it. After seeing this video I understand the problems better than before and it's given me another angle of attack against it. Thanks Guys well done.

I’m in my 50’s and I actually diagnosed on this myself because it was so localized and happened from sleeping on my side. Then I did an internet search with my symptoms and there it was.
So glad you made a video about this, I hadn’t looked up what to do about it! I have a couple tennis balls I can try the exercises with maybe because that’s softer and smaller than the softball. Would the foam roller work lengthwise?

I swear to gosh you guys have helped me out so many times. You guys are my go to. I've had years of foot pain. I have costo for years. It never got up to my chest area until this week and not to mention I had the worst next pain the week before. I thought it was my posture. I knew about the back pod but I can't seem to pay that month for freaking plastic so I order a ball hard cup 😆 way cheaper I read that on comments well now I cannot bend over at all with chest pain and here you guys are and that damn back pod. Lol well I guess I invest in it now. This crap is awful. You guys can fix anything. I do have a broken 💔. Grief is awful. Just lost my dad. Maybe that's why it flared up. Tks again guys.

I got it in my late 20s. I did not have much pain other than some tenderness along the sides of my ribs. I actually was at the doctors for something completely unrelated when I was diagnosed. But, it was SO difficult to breathe at times.

I had this chest issue for over a month and had it checked out and the doctor still couldn't pin point what the problem was. I did an EKG and nothing was wrong with my heart. Just when I'm about to get a chest x-ray and my blood work tests I found this video.

I have this as well. I have had to go to the emergency room various times because of it, and I have had numerous cardiovascular tests at the emergency room and my cardiologist office, and the tests come back normal. I find it usually happens after I excercise, even light weightlifting triggers costochondritis for me. I also have Fibromyalgia and various other health issues. Fibromyalgia can cause costochondritis. I notice sometimes after I excercise with light weights, a day or two later my costochondritis starts up and lasts about 2 weeks, which is a nightmare. Basically its difficult for me to excercise. It causes me depression as well because I'm always worried and tense.

Yes I relate very much! I don't have fibromyalgia but the symptoms of costo are brutal - have had my heart checked I don't know how many times and it's fine - it's muscular/skeletal the doctors tell me - this has given me super anxiety as well - I was playing a show with the band on the weekend (I'm a drummer) and the pain playing was like never anything I have experienced - starts with a stabbing pain in the upper right back and then comes down to the front of my sternum all the way down my rib cage - incredible pain - somehow I got through the three hour show - unfortunately advil did nothing - only voltaren cream offered me any pain relief. So if that does not kill me I think I can handle this :) - even though it's extremely painful - been doing tons of stretches every morning and yoga too - has helped a lot - been off the weights for two months now - have had this about 7 months now. Waiting for my back pod - this I really hope will be the difference maker :)

@Patrick Handlovsky I have a appointment with a pain management doctor at the end of this month. Hopefully he or she can help me because I want to workout again without having to live in fear of having a bad costochondritis flare up. It also causes me alot of anxiety because it makes me feel like I'm having some heart issues. I hope you find some relief as well. Let me know if anything you find works for you.

Let me know how that goes - only real pain relief for me is as mentioned the Voltaren topical cream - otherwise a ton of stretching - almost an hour a day total and keeping good sleeping habits helps with the pain too I find - but yes, I have developed some pretty major anxiety over this even though i got checked so many times for heart stuff and all comes back fine - if the pain was not in the chest always it would not make me as near as anxious as it does now. Good luck with everything moving forward for you!!

I have hypermobility in some joints, and so does my father. It seems my sternum is like that too. Im 25 and really active so i usually dont have this pain but latelly (whenever i try an aggressive stretch when i have a chest day, e.g db flys) it is one of the worst pains i ever felt.
It seems its kinda traumatic and not chronical, so imma stop the pec stretches and do these exercises from the video since they've been helping.

My Dad IS a heart attack survivor. But I feel you just saved him a lot of anxiety and pain. He has gone to many Doctors and the ER. His heart is fine BUT he has been dealing with chest pain for years now. We did hear a diagnosis of arthritis but only drugs given...did not work. It has become a meme in our family to joke about Daddy always rubbing his chest. Not funny when I hear he has been up all night, scared and hurting at 74 years old. I am going to help him get this treated straight away. I will update. Thank you so much. Your videos are more important than you know.

Good info. This has to be my problem. I’m 67 and my posture has declined so I’m going to try these exercises. Have had a slight soreness under right breast but not that painful. My heart was checked out a couple of years ago and it was fine. Will try the exercises and will mention to Dr later in year if soreness remains.

I was exercising my traps at they gym when I felt an awkward back pull there. But 10 seconds into it, my chest began to hurt along with the shortness of breath. I’ve had costochondritis before but I never imagined a pulled trapezius muscle would trigger it.

Yeah muscle strain can cause costochondritis. It's the same thing when hunching forward to look at my phone.my TRAPS GET SOO SORE, breathing in and out will feel sharp onto my left upper chest

I've had a problem with right side rhomboid area, sometimes into lower right rib, into front of chest. I've had MRI and x-ray and PT and seen spine specialist. All think it's just myofascial pain. I'm VERY active and I've had trigger point injections in that area that haven't helped one bit. Today I was sitting in a chair and it went straight to middle of my back thru to middle of chest. Still hurts but not as bad. I don't follow up with spine dr.for two more weeks. Wonder if this is what I've got??? I'll have to try some of these stretches which are different than what I was taught at PT. They said it was probably spine immobility (IM ACTIVE 60 Y/O!!) 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Bob and Brad! I have a question that’s a doozy! First- I’m the LAST person to question things, especially what’s recommended by doctors, but after joining multiple costochondritis support groups, I can’t help but need to ask the guys who have helped me the most with my costo!

In these groups, the question that gained the most discussion was “when did you develop Costo? Before Covid, while you had Covid, or after you received the Covid vaccine?” And I checked my math, but I first started feeling MINOR costo symptoms 5 days after shot #1. MAJOR symptoms 2 weeks after shot #2… and I was absolutely shocked that there were hundreds of people who were saying the same thing as me. No symptoms whatsoever before shots.

ER visits, heart tests, endoscopy, physical therapist visits, etc.

So my question, is there ANY possibility that these are related?? I’m having the most difficult time with this… even my physical therapist said that her referrals for costo in the past year have quadrupled and she as wondering “why the sudden up-tick??”

Hey. My symptoms of chest pain showed up when I've got the first jab (which was Pfizer). I was done ECG, (that didn't show any abnormalities), as well as EC, so I concluded it might be an autoimmune response case. Feel mild discomforts now, and debating to give up on the 2nd shot. What kind of exercises does your pt suggest given the costochondritis? I've stopped ruling out my chondromalacia+impigment of the shoulder, which is horrible. Currently looking for questions what should I do while exercising, coz I'm very scare of worsening

Thank you so much for guiding me towards the Backpod! I was fortunate to buy it on Amazon at a much reduced price. My costo pain at its worst was 9-10/10, so I waited to use it for the first time on the following day when the pain level had subsided to about 5-6/10. Felt 95% better the next day and 100% the second day👏👍

My ER doc said my chest pain was cause by inflammation of connective tissue. I had to figure it out by research as well. I do mid-back contractions and stretches anytime I can), foam roll mid-back (arms up), and, most importantly, adjust my stance while running. My new running stance (slightly leaving forward) is such that movement of my rib cage is better distributed and my mid back is no longer stiff while running. It’s really helped. Considering chiropractic visits and massages targeting this area after this pandemic stuff settles.

I also have this condition, for a year now. The pain resonates from my sternum and my upper right ribs and continues to my neck, shoulders and spine all the way to the middle of my back. when i bend my neck there is also pain in my spine. I also have inflammation of connective tissue shown through blood test. what did the doctor tell you on how to treat the inflammation?

When I did my blood test, specifically nuclear autoantib screen test. It showed that my connective tissue was abnormally high. it's supposed to be between 0-1, but mine is 3.9. I have to do a blood test again so they can re-check as it might be connected to another disease like lupus or something, but they haven't specified it yet. I'm still waiting on my results, but hopefully it gets cleared up soon.

How was your inflammation diagnosed?

@Aissa Callas They didn’t diagnose it, just basically assigned medical terminology to my symptoms. Being the ER, they only wanted to make sure there was no evidence of damage to heart tissue or irregular heart beat. I feel like this topic does not get enough attention, and goes undiagnosed. I also noticed that rolling my mid back helps relieve tension, since a tight mid back relays all the movement to the sternum.

I have enough common sense to realize how superficial the pain is, I couldn't decide if I strained my pectoral or if it is junction of rib cage and sternum. I feel bad for those who thought it was a heart attack! I have neglected pulling excercises for too long, the rear connection of the ribcage was a very insightful tip. Thanks for the info.
